Import and Mount PARISC 11.11 (VxVM 3.5/VxFS 3.3) Filesystems on HP-UX 11.31 - Itanium (VxVM/VxFS 5)

Do you folks see any issues with this?

I am getting an RX6600 as my Backup Server (NetBackup) where split mirror RAW VxVM Volumes and Filesystems from an 11.11 PARIC Ecosystems will be regularly mounted/mashed and backed up to an LTO-4 Infrastructure.

The RX6600 server will of course be 11.31 and very possibly VxVM 5.0 (Due to its ability to be "friendly" with BusinessCopy and BCV type clones -- aka VxVM Clones on the same host issue).

We're in a "transition" state and can't replace our production PARISC machines with Itanium and HP-UX 11.31 or even upgrade them to 11.23 or 11.31. We're essentially stuck with VxVM 3.5 and VxFS 3.3/3.5.

Surely there are mixed Itanic and PARISC and VxVM versions out there?

Hi Nelson,

On the volumemanager front.

vxvm 3.5 diskgroup versions are still supported on vxvm 5.0.

Importing the diskgroup shouldnt be a problem.

On the filesystem front.

vxfs 5.0 supports disk layout version 4 and higher. (fstyp -v /dev/vx/dsk// to check the (dlv) version of the "vxfs 3.3/vxfs 3.5" filesystem)

So as long as there is no system with the "HP-UX 11.00 default filesystem disk layout version 3" you should be ok.

In fact Oracle migration from PARISC to Itanium Integrity systems is a simple unmount from old and mount on new -- right?

Our Backup software is NetBackup - which uses I think a tweaked version of GNU tar.

I've been actually able to read Windows and Solaris NetBackup tapes on my HP-UX (PARISC) host.

Currently my PARISC NetBackup server serves a myriad of various Client OS - Solaris, Windows and HP-UX.

My only concern realy was with 11.31 Itanium and VxVM 4.1/5.0's ability to import PARISC 11.11 VxVM diskgroups and for the Itanium machine to be able to read it and push it to tape.

No oracle expert. But metalink seems to suggest that oracle 10g is the minimum supported oracle version on HP-UX 11.31.
