Is it safe to sue online JFS + lvreduce to reduce FS and LVs

Hi

I have done this few times and it worked always but I still want to hear suggestions.

I used online JFS to reduce the file system first and then use lvreduce to reduce the logical volumes. As I said, it worked all the time.

Is this really safe or I am just being lucky

thanks

Re: Is it safe to sue online JFS + lvreduce to reduce FS and LVs

Hi:

No, this is the proper order in which to reduce the size of a JFS filesystem.

The filesystem "sits" within the container called a "logical volume", so as stated, first reduce the size of the filesystem, and then shrink the surrounding container to prevent data corruption.

Of course, it is always prudent to backup the filesystem *before* you do maintenance on it.

Sometimes it may be necessary to defragment the filesystem first with 'fsadm' before a successful reduction will occur. See the discussion of "File System Resizing" in the man pages for 'fsadm_vxfs(1M)' for more information.

Regards!

Hi James

Thanks for a quick reply, when you said "No" Did you mean that I am not just lucky, it is because I did the right thing ?

Is this supported by HP ?

Hi (again):

I'm sorry if I confused you. The method you have been using is *correct* and supported.
