Oracle Installation doubts

We have a server currently running Oracle 7.3.4 on HP UX 10.2 We are setting up a new server(also HP UX 10.2) to migrate the database to the new server. Few questions before I do the Oracle Installation on the new machine
1) How do I check whether the Oracle Parallel Server Installation is installed on the current server.
2) What is the diffrence between custom installation and default installation provided by Oracle Installer
3)At what point would be SQL*NET 2.3.4 installed ?
Many Thanks in advance

Re: Oracle Installation doubts

Hello,

1)
a- Launch Oracle Universal Installer and look at the installed product
b - select * from PRODUCT_COMPONENT_VERSION;
c- Oracle Parallel Server option is visible when you loggin via SQL*PLus or when you

2) The default installation use standard option, custom allow you to pick modules you need.

3) SQL*Net is installed by default and Oracle Isntaller will ask you if you want to configure it after the RDMS engine is installed.

Cheers

Re: Oracle Installation doubts

Thanks Nicolas- I did select * from PRODUCT_COMPONENT_VERSION from my sql*plus prompt . Is this enough or do I have to launch oracle universal installer as mentioned by you ?
If so, could you please mention how I can launch the oracle universal installer ?
Thanks a lot

Re: Oracle Installation doubts

points a b c mentionned in the answer to your first question are different ways to do the same thing. If you did the select, you should know wether you have your option installed.

Runing universal installer without any CD could only be done if it had been installed. Then you should run runInstaller that is in your path. If it's not installed, you should mount the first CD and run it from the CD.
Universal installer is only available from version 8 of Oracle. As you mentionned you have 7, it might not match.

Fred

Re: Oracle Installation doubts

This isn't what you asked - but two cents worth of free observations... feel free to just skip the rest of the article if this is something you already know, and you probably do - so please forgive the assumption that you may not know about this...
Oracle 7.x with SQLNET 2.x breathed its last sometime in 98 or 99. Seriously consider upgrading. Even 8.0 has been desupported- and now 8.1.7.4 is the terminal release of 8i and I think is in its last days of support (it may even be out of it). Current versions are 9.x and 10.x. Here's why you need to move as soon as possible: Between Oracle 7 and Oracle 8 there was a major change in the data dictionary. Therefore, the migration between Oracle 7 and Oracle 8 was pretty big. Fittingly the best tools for migrating from 7 are in the version 8 system.... Which is getting harder and harder to obtain (you MIGHT be able to download it from otn.oracle.com). So, as time goes on, the migration Oracle 7 becomes an Oracle 7 to 8.0 conversion, then an Oracle 7 to Oracle 8i conversion, then an Oracle 7 to oracle 9i conversion, and soon you're going to be faced with a conversion from Oracle 7 to Oracle 10. What I'm getting at here is that probability of a successful conversion to a new version is getting signifigantly smaller and smaller for you as time goes on. I know that I'd HATE to think about doing an Oracle 7 to Oracle 9i conversion right now - I would expect to have to use import/export and be in for a world of pain depending on how big and complex your system is... A conversion of Oracle Apps or SAP of a large size would be a nightmare. As time goes on your chances of success decrease, while the effort required to do the conversion goes signifigantly up.

Re: Oracle Installation doubts

1) Your OS has been out of support for over a year. Seriously consider 11.11 if your hardware supports it.

2) Your database is also way out of support. Consider an upgrade path that gets you to 9i release 1 at a minimum. 8.1.7 is almost out of support as well.
