Presenting virtual disk to multiple hosts

Probably stupid question but was wondering if it is at all possible to have one virtual disk attached to two hosts, with both hosts being able to read/write.

We have an HP EVA attached to 2 hosts and ideally would like to have a 'file system' accessible to both. Do not want to go down the NFS route. Is additional software required?

Yes, the EVA has no problem with it, but the reason is that it only serves data blocks to the hosts, it has no idea what a file is.

Unfortunately, most operating systems simply cannot do this, because the lack this required components for concurrent disk access. For some operating systems it is possible to buy third-party add-on software which provides this feature.

I think what you will need is an advanced Volume Manager and Filesytem.. ie.. the Veritas Clucter Volume Manager.

The next release of HP-UX will incorporate a much improved Veritas features (4.0 releases of VxVM, VxFS, CVM, and Cluster) although at the current release that is bundled/integrated with VxVM -- some "cluster" volume manager functionality is already present.
