Hi Guys,
Can anyone help, I have a DLT80 which I would like to connect to the rp3410. The OS using is 11.11 and currently there is a MSA 30 connected to the ULTRA 160 bus adapter additional. I was trying to use the integrated scsi port for the DLT80, but somehow or rather, when I do a ioscan -fn, I can see the tape drive and device file and can even tar files onto the tape. But , once I reboot the server, the server will go to panic and I/O hang and keep rebooting and rebooting. At the moment I have remove the Tape drive and my server is ok.
Question,
1) Can I use the integrated card on the rp3410 to connect to DLT80??
2) if cannot, can I use the Ultra 160 card to connect??

There is LVD and SE.

I believe the DLT80 is a LVD device.

You should be able to connect it to an LVD SCSI card on the rp3410 server.

ioscan -fnC ext_bus

This will get you a listing of the possible scsi devices.

That tape drive should have its own card, with no disk hung off of it. If it is sharing the channel with disk the i/o will be much slower.

LVD is usually stamped on the back of the SCSI card in the rp4310 server.

Check the docs on the DLT80 drive to see what kind of SCSI connection it needs. Its possible you may need a different card, but its all in the guide that came with the tape drive.

From this output you can identify which interface you wish to use against the labelling on the back of your pr3410 server.

- do you have a SCSI terminator attached to the tape drive?

- check the SCSI cable connectors for bent pins.

check SCSI ID.
Do not allow any device with same SCSI ID.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the info, by the way, here is a brief things that I have gone thorugh but still cannot get the drive up. I have connected the drive on the internal scsi port path 0/1/1/x.x.x (integrated port on M/B ) the drive is set up scsi 3 with a wide single ended terminator ( the terminator with a led light on top of it ) When I run ioscan -fn , Ican see the drive and path , than I ran insf to install the special files, I even try to use tar to transfer some files to the tape drive to proof that is working. But, when I reboot, my server will go to panic , io hang and keep rebooting till i remove the drive than is ok. I already try changing the scsi id, still cannot. Please advice???

your tape drive should be 0/1/1/1.3.0 for target 3
while your internal disks should be 0/1/1/0.0.0 and 0/1/1/0.1.0

OK?

then access the console, reboot and stop at BCH (boot console handler)

at the main menu enter
ser (for service)
scsi
that should list your scsi settings
if you do not have 0/1/1/1 in there enter
scsi init 0/1/1/1 7
(to set the initiator id to 7)
scsi rate 0/1/1/1 ultra
(to set the scsi transfer rate)
scsi
(to display all values)
then try to reboot

you might experiment with auto termination, and (if you have one) try another terminator.

The bus for your root disk is 0/1/1/0 and is ultra160 wide LVD SCSI.

The other bus is
0/1/1/1 and is ultra wide Single Ended SCSI.

Our DLT8000s (Quantum) are fast-wide differential. If you have one of these, then think that you should not be connecting this to the 0/1/1/1 bus that is single-ended.

You should also NOT connect this device to the same bus as the root disk. It isn't supported. It will cause HP-UX to panic because the stape driver hogs the bus, which causes timeouts to the root disk. When HP-UX cannot see its root disk for even a very short period of time it PANICs.

If that is OK, then need to ensure that you do not have too much termination. If the drive has in-built termination turned on, plus you have a terminator on the end of the cable, plus termination on the controller card, then thats too much and you will get problems.

Lastly you need to make sure that you have the correct type of terminator. You should not put an SE terminator on a LVD bus, nor vice versa since they have a different resistance.

Really, you need your own controller card dedicated to the tape drive.
