Re: TYPE OF RAID SUPPORTED BY LVM

No LVM does NOT support raid 5.

Prior to 11.31 you could only RAID 0 (striping) or RAID 1 (mirroring). You could not do true RAID 10, but you could sort of do it with extent-based stripes and mirroring.

At 11.31 you now have the ability to do true RAID 10. This may be available on 11.23 via patches, but I don't recall at the moment.

Now, if you want to switch volume manager and use the Veritas Volume Manager, VxVM, then I believe you can do RAID 5. I don't think software based RAID 5 is a good idea though.

For true RAID 5 you are far better using a RAID controller in the server, or just going to a SAN and letting the SAN do all the work of RAID 5 and the parity calculations needed for it.

Sammy,

Ever heard about this wonderful newfangled web site thingy called google? Try it some day!

Feed it a search string like: hpux lvm raid5
It will come back with the answer to your question and then some!

Not aware of 11.31 but prior to that raid0 & 1 are supported.

Any comments, experts ?
