V class not booting from alt path

Hi all

I wish to mirror my the root disk on a V 2250 server running HP-UX 11i with the March 2003 patches. If I reboot the server after completing the steps and I type sea, only the primary boot disk is displayed. bo alt also yields an error message stating that the alternate disk is not a LIF volume.

Here are the commands I executed:

# pvcreate -f -B /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
# vgextend vg00 /dev/dsk/c0t5d0
# for N in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
> lvextend -m /dev/vg00/lvol$N /dev/dsk/c0t5d0
> done
# mkboot -l /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
# lifls ???l /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
# mkboot -a ???hpux ???lq??? /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
# lifcp /dev/rdsk/cXtXdX:AUTO -
# mkboot -b updatediaglif2 -p ISL -p AUTO -p HPUX -p LABEL /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
# lvlnboot -r /dev/vg00/lvol3
# lvlnboot -b /dev/vg00/lvol1
# lvlnboot -s /dev/vg00/lvol2
# lvlnboot -d /dev/vg00/lvol2
# setboot ???a 1/0/0.5.0

Output of lnlnboot -v

# lvlnboot -v
Boot Definitions for Volume Group /dev/vg00:
Physical Volumes belonging in Root Volume Group:
/dev/dsk/c0t4d0 (1/0/0.4.0) -- Boot Disk
/dev/dsk/c0t5d0 (1/0/0.5.0) -- Boot Disk
Boot: lvol1 on: /dev/dsk/c0t4d0
/dev/dsk/c0t5d0
Root: lvol3 on: /dev/dsk/c0t4d0
/dev/dsk/c0t5d0
Swap: lvol2 on: /dev/dsk/c0t4d0
/dev/dsk/c0t5d0
Dump: lvol2 on: /dev/dsk/c0t4d0, 0

Output of setboot

# setboot
Primary bootpath : 1/0/0.4.0
Alternate bootpath : 1/0/0.5.0

Autoboot is ON (enabled)
Autosearch is ON (enabled)

What am I missing?

Re: V class not booting from alt path

Your procedure looks great.

Compare it to the one in this post and see if anything is missing(I don't think so).

Go over your steps again and look for an error message during the process, probably a one liner that might indicate something failed along the way.

Re: V class not booting from alt path

There are some sequence differences, some extra parameters, and some extra commands between your steps and my "cookbook":

pvcreate -B /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
vgextend /dev/vg00 /dev/dsk/c0t5d0
mkboot /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
mkboot -a "hpux -lq" /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0
mkboot -a "hpux -lq" /dev/rdsk/primary_boot_disk
lvexntend(s)
setboot -a 1/0/0.5.0

Re: V class not booting from alt path

Hi,
i remember of an old bug, where the alternate path was not correctly seen by the auto-search, even < bo alt > did it wrong, and could not see the proper disk.

Try booting with the proper hw path.

bo 1/0/0.5.0

Re: V class not booting from alt path

Hi Ruan,

Not positive, but the order of your commands could be the problem.
I do the mkboot & lifcp commands *before* I lvextend all the LVs. I also use double quotes on the hpux command in the mkboot -a command. That always works for me.

Also I have a question - Why are you mirroring on the same controller. It will be a SPOF for the vg00 VG. I'd recommend you mirror to a disk on another HBA for true redundancy.

Re: V class not booting from alt path

not very sure, does it show all details when lifls -l "device name of alternate boot path" excuted.

Also in PDC does it show the alternate boot path when

sea ipl is executed?

You can also try lvlnboot -R and check.

Re: V class not booting from alt path

Thanks for all your responses.

I will try the commands in a different order.
The strange thing is that when you do a "ls 1/0/0.5.0" after one has interrupted the boot process, it comes up with an error "Missing LIF header". But when you do a "lifls -l /dev/dsk/c0t5d0" at the normal command prompt I get results returned.

Unfortunately there is only one HBA available to this server.

Re: V class not booting from alt path

There was a bug on HP-UX 11.0 and V-classes that meant the alternate path did not work properly. I thought there was a patch for thus thus should not be in 11i!!!

Add your alternate boot disk to /stand/bootconf (just copy the existing line & edit accordingly)

I use updatediaglif & not updatediaglif2, but this is wibble reqally as it does not touch HPUX && you missed out PAD

# mkboot -b updatediaglif -p ISL -p AUTO -p HPUX -p LABEL -p PAD /dev/rdsk/c0t5d0

Can you boot from alternate when you do a boot from PDC... e.g.
bo 1/0/0.5.0

My 0.02??? worth...Regards

Re: V class not booting from alt path

Thanks for all the help!

I edit /stand/bootconf and added the second drive. I also did a "setboot -a 1/0/0.5.0". Rebooted the server, but "sea" still only yields the primary harddrive and "bo alt" and "bo 1/0/0.5.0" still yields LIF header missing/not a LIF volume.

Any other suggestions guys?
