VGDA

I found one error when I given the dmesg command in HP-UX 10.20.Also the response of the volume group(on that HDD) is very poor.

lv_readvgdats: Could not read VGDA 2 header & trailer from disk H/W path 8/16/5.
lv_readvgdats: Could not read VGSA 1 header & trailer from disk H/W path 8/16/5.

What can be the reasons for this problem? Is any way to restore the VGDA and VGSA? Please mail me ASAP.

Re: VGDA

It sounds like a disk has been replaced at some point and no-one has run a vgcfgrestore on it yet to restore the VG info. Is this the case ?

Is the disk on 8/16/5 currently in a VG and has an lvol on it ? in which case this may be an old error from when it was replaced. Have you checked in syslog to see what date these errors ocurred on - maybe theyre old.

Re: VGDA

This error is generally caused by excessive i/o like restoring a
file system, doing a backup, or copying large amounts of data. This
is due to the timeout for the disk default only being set to 30
seconds. When alternate links are setup and these time outs keep
getting hit it keeps switching from one link to the other when the
other times out. This can be seen with the command;

sar -d 5 5

You want to look for %busy being 100% and avwait being greater than
30. In this case after installing [PHKL_13573/PACHRDME/English] the s800 10.20 JFS hang,
ftruncate on JFS files cumulative patch, the problem has not
reoccurred.

With IO errors and problems, if the trouble reoccurs, do pvchange -t,
for example: pvchange -t 180 pv_path to change the timeout. 300 is
the max (5 minutes) 30 seconds is the default.
