could not create volume group 11iv3

hello,

i need to create a volume group for my shared storage:

my steps:

pvcreate /dev/rdsk/c5t0d1

mkdir /dev/vgnew mknod /dev/vgdata/ group c 64 0x010000

vgcreate  /dev/vgdata /dev/dsk/c5t0d1

i received as error the following"

vgcreate: Volume group "/dev/vgdata" could not be created:
Unable to read the physical volume.

i have rp4400 server with 11iv3 OS connected and presented to 4400 EVA.

thanks in advance

Re: could not create volume group 11iv3

Strings /etc/lvmtab

check if the disk is mentioned.

#mount

check if the disk is mounted as whole disk

# vxdisk list

check if /dev/dsk/c5t0d1 is a vxvm disk

#swapinfo -tam

check if this disk used as swpap

If everything is fine do

# pvcreate ...

check for errors

# pvcreate -f ...

and try again.

*edit*

just saw it ...

mkdir /dev/vgnew

mknod /dev/vgdata/ group c 64 0x010000

vgcreate  /dev/vgdata

This can not work ...

Re: could not create volume group 11iv3

Hello,

thanks for your reply,

the problem is related to the storage, it seems that the physical volume has a problem but until now i didn't know why? and how can we resolve? (as per HP support)

the physical volume is a LUN created on 5000 EVA and presented to rp 4400 server.

from ioscan command i can see two paths to this Vdisk.(it is normal situation)

but when i try the command i received the message"unable to read the physical volume"

my steps is as follows:

-pvcreate /dev/disk/disk14

-mkdir /dev/vg01

-mknod /dev/vg01/group c 64 0x020000

-vgcreate /dev/vg01 /dev/disk/disk14 ----> error:unable to read the physical volume

any help please?

Re: could not create volume group 11iv3

Try to read the PV in other ways:

# pvdisplay /dev/disk/disk19

# ioscan -P health

# diskinfo -v /dev/rdisk/disk14

# scsimgr inquiry -D /dev/rdisk/disk14

# dd if=/dev/rdisk/disk14 of=/dev/null bs=1024k count=1000

(should take about 10 seconds, give or take)

This is stating that the PV is not configured for LVM.

What output do you receive when running the pvcreate command?

Check in syslog if you find any corresponding errors related to that Physical volume.
