diskinfo -v additional inquiry bytes on Symmetrix

I've heard that one can decode diskinfo -v additional inquiry bytes to get EMC Symmetrix meta volume IDs, Symmetrix IDs, etc.

I've googled, tried some decoding with *some* luck, but there is more information which is just out of my grasp.

Does anyone know where I might find additional information on this topic?

You can obtain EMC's 'inq' utility from EMC which will return the information you seek.

I've got inq, but I'd like to be able to use HP utilities at times, i.e., new additions to the SAN, etc.

I am not sure what your requirement are? But inq is the utility which will give you the "symmetrix" serial number, Lun number, size. use "inq -h" to get more options

If you want more details about each device and its status and want to do things like Timefinder/SRDF, you have to buy Solution enabler and the related products license.

I'm looking to access EMC Symmetrix information without using EMC software tools. I'm uncertain that I'll always have the Solutions Enabler or syminq available to me.

There are a lot of older, second-hand, lower-cost Symmetrix boxes available, and they don't typically come with EMC-supported software.

Hi Daniel,

Yes, one can decode the additional inquiry bytes in "diskinfo -v" to know the EMC device information.
e.g. 103 Byte with Bit 3 equal to 1 indicates it is BCV.
32-35 Bytes indicates LDEV.

I guess SPC ( SCSI protocol Compliance ) 2
or SPC-3 would make this possible.
To get the details of those bytes, I would suggest to contact EMC to get the information. However if you have support contract with HP, then you may get it from them.
