error when using fsadm

Can someone help:

appl/patrol # fsadm -F vxfs -b 516096 /appl/patrol/
vxfs fsadm: filesystem /appl/patrol/ doesn't match filesystem super-block on /dev/vg00/rlvol3
vxfs fsadm: use [-r] to specify a raw device

I haven't encountered this before however have some knowledge, do I need to fsck the filesystem or is there another way around this as it is not suitable to unmount the filesystem

Thanks
hello
