PV Name /dev/dsk/c18t0d5
PV Name /dev/dsk/c20t0d5 Alternate Link
PV Name /dev/dsk/c22t0d5 Alternate Link
PV Name /dev/dsk/c24t0d5 Alternate Link

It indicates

(a) You have one disk with total 4 paths ( one will be active others will be in passive ,when primary link fails the first alternative will become your primary)

(b) Total PE 10000

You have total 10000 Physical extents avilable in the disk

(c) Free PE 9000

You have 1000 PE used and 9000 PE free in your disk .

I belive you are confused with Free PE , it doesn`t mean that it is unallocated , but it mean already allocated and it is available to use

Re: extend PV from PEs

"PV" is the physical volume (disk/LUN), in your case probably a LUN 5 with 4 pathes to it.

It has 10000 Physical extends (default is 4MB each), 9000 extends are still not used for any logical volume.

Now you can extend existing LVOLS or create new LVOLs.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: extend PV from PEs

There is a misunderstanding: PEs cannot exist outside PVs.

This PV has a total of 10000 PEs. 1000 of them are occupied by some LV(s), so 9000 are still free. You can use the free PEs in two ways:

- extend an existing LV within the same VG (command: lvextend. If the LV contains a filesystem, the next step will be "fsadm -b" if you have OnlineJFS, or else unmount the filesystem and use extendfs. If the LV contains a raw database, your DBA should know what to do after a lvextend.)

- create a new LV to this VG (commands: lvcreate, then whatever you need)

Re: extend PV from PEs

Hi,

PV ==> physical volume ==> your lun/hdd

one PV is devided in to multiple PEs (logical)

for example , if you have hdd 200MB(PV) , if your PE size is 10 MB you can have 20 PEs.

if you create a logical volume ( on which you create filesystem) of size 50 MB

you have

Total PE 20
Free PE 15

Hope you got the concept.
I would suggest you to go through some LVM documents to understand the concept.
