I want to extend lvol3 (/). I know it is contiguous/strict and it is the last lvol on the disk. There is no more PE free on this disk.
So I extend vg00 with a new disk, but if try to extend the lvol I got this error message.
# lvextend -l 2500 /dev/vg00/lvol3
lvextend: Not enough free physical extends available.
Logical volume "/dev/vg00/lvol3" could not be extended.
Failure possible caused by contiguous allocation policy.
Failure possible caused by strict allocation policy
There are enough free extends available in th vg, because the new disk is completly empty.
Hhmmmmm, that is confusing me.

SolutionYes, there may be enough free extents but they aren't contiguous to lvol3. The way to do this would be to use Ignite. Do a make_tape_recovery, boot the tape and resize your lvols. Ignite is available here:

Re: extend / (lvol3)
Appears to me this is one of those situations where Ignite is your best answer.
So do a make_tape_recovery - interactive - and use it to reorg your vgv00.

Re: extend / (lvol3)
You need to free up some space on the disk immediately after lvol3, ie. lvol4. Youve already added a spare disk to vg00, thats good, now pvmove vg00/lvol4 to the new disk then you will be able to extend lvol3 (but only by as much as the size of lvol4 you moved).

Re: extend / (lvol3)
I would also ask why you need to enlarge /. I usually use 200MB and it's plenty - typically around one third full. You might want to take a look at what is using the space in your root volume and weed out the inappropriate.

Re: extend / (lvol3)
To stefan: we have only three lvol /, /stand, swap.
So ther is no lvol that i can move on the other disk. thanx.
But the other guys has remember to read the fuc..... man pages first.
I have forgotten that contiguous also means that extends from one lvol is only allowed to reside on one disc.
Thanx to all.
Problem is fixed - No more answers, please !!!!

Re: extend / (lvol3)
just a curious question:
Why not use pvmove to move some extents to the new disk and
resize afterwards?
I never used that on HP-UX, AIX has the command pvmigrate
which does exactly that (on all filesystems without reboot)
so I wonder if there is no such thing in HP-UX...
