file named lifvol

hopefully a quick question.
During a cleanup session for /var I found a file in /var/tmp called lifvol of about 33MB in size and dated form March of 2000. The server has been rebuilt/replatformed a couple of times since then. What is this file and can I safely delete it. Here's the ls -l listing for it.

-rw-rw-rw- 1 root sys 33573888 Mar 10 2000 lifvol

Thank you

Gary

Re: file named lifvol

It looks like it may be the bootlif from a tape or possibly from a boot disk.

Try doing:

# lifls -l /var/tmp/lifvol

Since it is in /var/tmp, it was probably a test someone did. It should not be needed and should be safe to remove.

Re: file named lifvol

Hi Gary,

I agree with Patrick.
It's my belief that anything in /tmp, /var/tmp or any /xxxx/tmp is fair game for removal.
IF you don't want something removed *don't* put it in a tmp dir. They're named that for a reason.

My 2 cents,
Jeff

Re: file named lifvol

I agree that was not needed anymore. It just sounded official and thought I'd double check.

I've removed the file and all appears well.

Thanks
