move raid disks to another server

Hi there,I have one rx2620 server with 2disks mirrored in raid1.I have data on it. My server has hardware problem (not disk problem) I have similar rx2620 server- same specs including same raid controller card. I would like to know if I can remove these disks and slot it in this server and make it fuction without losing the data.

Re: move raid disks to another server

Shalom,

This should work.

You need to take care that if you are moving just one disk that you don't stick it in there only to be overwritten by the already running disk.

To insure this does not happen, you may need to shut down the system and boot off only the new raid disk. then you can stick the original in and know that the synch occurs from and to the correct disks.

Re: move raid disks to another server

Thnx Steve, for your response. On the new server I am not going to use any other disks just these two disks from failed server. You say it is possible.Do you mean I just remove the disks and slot it in the new server and thats it.I donot have to do anything else? and the controller on the new server will pick the configuration?I hope I will have the data intact.

Re: move raid disks to another server

Hi,

Whilst I agree with Steven in theory, I would proceed only if the data is backed up. I moved a disk from a D260 to a D360, identical except the number of internal disk (I/O, memory and disk ID's all the same) and the machine did not boot - it panic'd on booting, so past expierience suggests to me that proceed under caution and only if the data is backed up.

I appreciate that the machines here are much newer and I would love to be proven wrong, but data is king so it needs protection.

Sorry to be a pesimist.

Re: move raid disks to another server

I assume it is a smartarray controller, so it works just like on a proliant.
If the disks are mirrored, you can use only one disk, but it is always better to have a backup of the data (on tape).

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
