volumegroup hpux vgexport 10.20 vgimport 11.00

Hi all,
I've got the following problem. I need to vgexport a volumegroup on a HPUX 10.20 host and vgimport it on a HPUX 11.00 host.

This has been tried in the past (in my company) ... with disastrous results. Apparantly the vxfs filesystems are not interchangeable (or were not at that time).
We never found out what the reason for the failure was (we were happy to recover the data).

My questions :
1) Has anyone done this ?
2) Has anyone run into problems with this ?
3) Is it patch related (fstyp outputs seem
to be compatible) ?
4) Other hints ?

Regards,
Tom Geudens

P.S. I've got no room (nor diskspace) for experiments. Either there is a good procedure (and I'll risk it) or there is not (and I'll use tapebackups - which is gonna take forever).
A life ? Cool ! Where can I download one of those from ?

Re: volumegroup hpux vgexport 10.20 vgimport 11.00

Pre requisits

1. 2 number of good backups of the affected filesystems
2. Check Vxfs versions on 10.20 and 11.X are the same , if not update them to the same level.

vgexport & vgimport I do not think u need a procedure for that

I have never done in my career

Re: volumegroup hpux vgexport 10.20 vgimport 11.00

Hi,
As for as Volume Group and Logical Volumes there is no comatibility problem between 11.0 and 10.20. Only problem may arise when you import the logical volume of vxfs FS if the 11.0 system VXFS Version is not compatible with the 10.20 VXFS version.

Yes. I have done it without any problem.Always better to have good backups.

Re: volumegroup hpux vgexport 10.20 vgimport 11.00

Extra question (extra points :-)
5) How do I unambiguously (hope I spelled that right) check the vxfs version ? Like I said I've checked a lvol with fstyp on the hpux 10.20 host, and get the following output :
fstyp -v /dev/vgemcbox5601/lv_dwh
vxfs
version: 3
f_bsize: 1024
f_frsize: 1024
f_blocks: 335872
f_bfree: 332363
f_bavail: 332360
f_files: 1312
f_ffree: 1073771904
f_favail: 1073771904
f_fsid: 1073872933
f_basetype: vxfs
f_namemax: 254
f_magic: a501fcf5
f_featurebits: 0
f_flag: 0
f_fsindex: 4
f_size: 335872

Except for the fact that the blocksize seems to be very small this looks like any lvol on the 11.00 host.
What should I look for ?

Re: volumegroup hpux vgexport 10.20 vgimport 11.00

Hi Tom

there isnt any problem to vgexport and vgimport a volumegroup from 10.20 to 11.00 or 11.11 .

i did it ny self from 10.20 to 11.11 3 month ago to our main computer in our office without any problem .

there isnt any problem with vxfs version becuase also 10.20 and 11.00 is working by default with JFS 3.0 ( you can install jfs 3.3 on hp-ux 11.00 ) .

please install on your 11.00 the QPK bundle of patches before doing it , also , check to see if this disk are belong to a serviceguard ( this need to take some other action also ) .

wish you lots of good luck , but if you had problem in the past , this is not a guideline that you will have also now problem ,

there isnt any issue to move VG from 10.20 to 11.00
