Microfocus Cobol vs HP MF Cobol for HPUX

My company has purchased licenses for the HP rebundled version of Microfocus Cobol. The vendor of the application that we use to compile it has informed us that this is unsupported at that we should use the genuine Microfocus Cobol. There is apparently some differences between the HP rebundled version and the version that comes direct from MF.

Since we already have developer and run time licenses for the HP MF Cobol, management does not want to repurchase licenses from Microfocus unless absolutely necessary.

One thought that we are trying to get information on is the possibility of purchasing a couple of developer licenses from Microfocus and scripting it so that these are use for development, but run time uses licenses from the HP MF Cobol licenses that are already purchased.

I don't know how reliable this would be, when you're looking at different libraries from each compiler and different license management software, but if you don't ask to see if anyone has ever had to deal with it...

Please note, this is not a request to bypass licensing requirements in any way. Management will purchase the Microfocus licenses if that is what is required in the end, but are looking if there are any ways to use the existing HP MF Cobol licenses for run time while compiling under the genuine Microfocus compiler.

Thanks
Steve

Re: Microfocus Cobol vs HP MF Cobol for HPUX

Steve,
If I was you I would push back on the Vendor to clarify why HP's Microfocus is "unsupported". Since HP has gone to the trouble of porting MicroFocus Cobol, why is your(application's) Vendor claiming its "not supported"? Is it simply that they haven't tested their application by recompiling it with HP's Microfocus Cobol or that they have recompiled using HP and have uncovered problems? 9 times out of 10 I have found that typical Vendor denials of support mean that the vendor simply has not "certified"(ie tested) their application using a particular complier or version of a database, as opposed to finding real incompatabilities.

Re: Microfocus Cobol vs HP MF Cobol for HPUX

We use Merant's Micro Focus Cobol for Unix.

This is because we run cyborg on our 11.00 servers. The issue at hand was what cobol compiler did the application support. It did not support HP Cobol, it only worked with Merant's Micro Focus.

We went with what the application vendor(cyborg) said they supported.

Re: Microfocus Cobol vs HP MF Cobol for HPUX

Hi steve

We use MF Cobol licence for compiling CICS for TX Series. we never use HP's MF cobol.

MF cobol has better advantages than HP's MF cobol

Ravi,

Can you elaborate a little on that? Define these advantages a little more?

Re: Microfocus Cobol vs HP MF Cobol for HPUX

That is wright. Before running "CYBORG" on Unix or NT Environment, it is recommanded that you should first install the Merant's Micro Focus Cobol for Unix / Merant Net Express for NT.

This is what CYBORG recommands. I think it is clear.
