perl-5.8.0 released

I've updated https://www.beepz.com/personal/merijn with a fresh gcc-3.1.1 build for hppa-2.0 with an Oracle prepared perl-5.8.0 including DBI-1.30

perl-5.8.0 has been released yesterday night. Official announcements will flood the web shortly :)

Have fun!

FYI: This is the most tested perl release ever.

Re: perl-5.8.0 released

procura, u da man!

to perl or not to perl shouldn't be a question

question: can an individual be considered an SA (Systems Administrator - and I'm talking about unix here, M$ doesn't count as an OS) if they can barely write shell scripts and have no clue about perl ??

Re: perl-5.8.0 released

Harry, IMHO an SA should have scripting skills. Either a reasonable knowledge of sh/awk/sed or advanced knowledge tcsh/perl/python/php

I think that if someone *can* script (in any language) he will be able to learn the scripting language used in the company she/he is (going to) work for.

Re: perl-5.8.0 released

And I will take the opportunity to bring a book under your attention (No, I've got no connections there, I just consider it to be a must for unix scriptees)

Slashdot has this thread about it:

Re: perl-5.8.0 released

perl has always been my programming/scripting language of choice.

I've used extensively for porting of one application database to another application database. And of course for regular system administration.

PYTHON and RUBY are other touted "scripting" languages, but perl still seems more natural for text processing.

My 2 cents

Re: perl-5.8.0 released

Thanx Procura for the heads up, I also recommend the Mastering Regular Expressions book by O'reilly, it will save a ton of typing and also help you understand those "written in Greek" Perl scripts you come across.

Re: perl-5.8.0 released

I couldn't find an appropriate thread to get points :} for announcing that I've uploaded perl-5.8.0 for HP-UX 10.20 to https://www.beepz.com/personal/merijn built with gcc-3.2 prepared for Oracle and includes all modules mentioned at the download page

Enjoy!
