MSM 760 Certificate errors

Having renewed the certificate for SOAP and RADIUS on our MSM760, we are now getting several SSL errors in the Visitor Management Tool:
initially this:     SSLHandshakeException:Receved Fatal Alart: handshake_failure: no details

After a reboot this:    SSLHandshakeException: sun.security.validatorexception: certificate chaining error: no details

The controller error log records this:   Error accepting SSL connection: faultstring: ssl_error_SSL error:14094416 :ssl routines: SSL3_read_bytes:sslv3 alert certificate unknown, details: ssl_accept() failed in soap_SSL_accept()

It seems there's something wrong with the certificate or how I've installed it, although it was accepted by the controller.

Where did you get the new certificate?

Proper CA signed or self signed?

It sounds like an intermediate certificate is missing. (Chaining)
