Are SAS cables hot-pluggable?

Hello,

I realize that this question seems trivial, but I’m really not sure and I would like to ask for a definitive advice.

Are SAS cables connecting external storage (e.g. MSA50) to serial Smart Array Controllers (e.g. P800) hot–pluggable? I mean two factors here: safety of the electronics and ability of the controller to recognize and properly serve new SAS/SATA topology that will result after plugging-in or unplugging the disk enclosure; let’s not discuss coping with the change on the side of the operating system here.

Regards,

Marcin

Re: Are SAS cables hot-pluggable?

SAS is not hot plug neither at the device end nor at the host end.

If it is not hot-pluggable, the question is why? Will it harm hardware or won't just the controller be unable to recognize new device topology?

Re: Are SAS cables hot-pluggable?

The MSA70 user manual says:

"Ensure that the servers attached to the enclosure are powered down and power cords are
disconnected before connecting SAS cables."

A clear message.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
