Convert RAID 5 to RAID 6 on MSA 2040
Hi all,
I have an MSA 2040 with 4 x 4TB drives in a RAID 5 array.
I've got 3 more identical disks to go in it and I need to add more storage but I also want to improve resilience.
I believe that I can do this by adding 2 more drives for storage and using the third as an extra parity disk in RAID 6.
The question is, can I do this on the fly without toasting the data on the existing RAID 5 array?
Thanks

Is your Volume Linear or Virtual Type?

You ask a very good question. I didn't set it up.
Is it easy to find out?

It shows in thr GUI as "Linear" or "Virtual" Volume.

Re: Convert RAID 5 to RAID 6 on MSA 2040
This could be a much longer answer but the short answer is:
1) Yes, you can add physical disks to a linear VDISK to expand the set size (see CLI manual for specifics). You cannot do this on virtual VDISK but, if you have enough free space in other virtual VDISKS then you could potentially delete the VDISK without effecting data availability. Then recreate it using larger set size and new RAID type as desired.
2) You cannot simply "convert" a VDISK from RAID5 to RAID6. For linear it involves moving the data to a new volume (host side copy), delete, and recreate. For virtual, the answer is the same if you don't have free space in the pool to absorb the deletion of the vdisk. If you do have free space in the virtual pool/vdisk then you can delete and recreate without effecting data availability.
