Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Hi,

We have a single controller MSA with two switches (cascaded - 12 ports available to hosts) and 2 * DL580s with 4*FC HBA 2101 each. Pl. check the attached diagram for the connection details. I created a simple zone comprising only 2 FC HBAs from both servers mapping to port 1 and 2 of both the switches. After enabling the configuration I can't see the LUNs and also can't see MSA from ACU. What could be the problem? Pl. help.

Thanks,
Karthik S S

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Karthik,
you are using WWNNs (world wide node names). I don't know if that works, I have always used WWPNs (port), which (for your adapters) start with '10:00'.

From your description it sounds like you are misunderstanding how zoning works. You do not 'map' WWNs to switch ports - a device 'logs-in' to the switch and then he knows what is connected.

You rather specify which ports/WWNs are allowed to talk to each other and you must include the MSA1000 controller port in the zone - do a 'switchShow' to find out the WWPN.

If that still does not work, I would try either port-based or entirely WWN-based zoning.

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Hi Uwe,

Thanks for that. But even after using Port WWNs it doesn't work :-(

As you guessed it right I am not very familar with zoning.

Thanks,

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Uwe,

After adding the MSA controller's port wwn now the luns are visible only on the first dl580 ..!!

How do I make it visible on the seconf dl580?

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Karthik,
I assume you have both switches linked with an external cable and you see an 'E_port' when you do a 'switchShow' command:

port 15: sw Online E-Port 10:00:00:60:69:51:3a:91 "fcswa2" (downstream)

(don't bother if it says 'upstream' instead)

Can you see the MSA on the second server when you run the ACU there? Do you have SSP (selective storage presentation - also known as LUN masking) enabled on the MSA?

Do you mean to say that I need to include these E-Port WWNs also to the zone?

Also I just wanted to be sure that when I say

"1,1;1,2;2,1;2,2"

does it point to ports 1 and 2 of both the switches??

Solution

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

I would throw out the domain, port members from the zone and use exclusively WWNs (or do it completely the other way round).

> Sorry for bugging you :-(

That's OK - it's a nice way to brush up my debugging skills and learn new things. Thank you for letting me trying out new things ;-)

Use the following command to change a switch's name:
> switchName "newname"

However, I see that your first switch is named "-switch1". I have seen a similar configuration and we could not change the name that way. It wasn't our system, I only could give it a short look and then the system was taken away. You could try and change the name through the web interface if the CLI way does not work.

--
No, you don't need to put the E-Ports in the zones. I just wanted to verify that the switches work together - it is hard to see when the system isn't round next door.

Yes, "1,1;1,2;2,1;2,2" addresses ports 1+2 of switches with domain-IDs 1+2.

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Yes, I could not change the name -switch1 :-( .. Instead I changed the switch 2's name from "switch" to "-switch2" ;-)

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

I used WWNs exclusively, still no luck,

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Karthik,
I don't see anything wrong with the zoning, but I may be blind. Have you tried to access the MSA1000 with ACU after the change?

The drivers (I assume you already have installed Windows?) should have picked up the zoning change, but you might want to try a reboot of the servers or toggle a port with "portDisable 1" and "portEnable 1" and see if this works.

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

portenable/disable didn't help but reboot did the trick. But this is not the behaviour I expect :-( .. Is it a must to reboot the servers??

Also spmgr display in windows is not similar to the output of unix spmgr. It does not show me the alternate paths. Pl. help.

Thanks,

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

The idea was to make the LUNs visible through only 2 FC cards from each dl580s with out remvoing the FC cables (they have 4 FC cards each). Now how do I actually make sure that the LUNs are seen through only 2 links?

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

It looks like the securepath driver sees the LUN through only one path i.e through the first FC HBA on the machine. (even when zoning is disabled). But before installing securepath I could see the 4 links to the same LUN from diskmanager.

Do I have to manually configure the alternate paths?

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Karthik,
I guess you are using Secure Path, Workgroup Edition. I have never used it with multiple fibre channel adapters to the same controller (port), but it looks like you can not accomplish what you want to do with the Workgroup Edition. I have never seen that one can configure alternate paths - it looks like you need the 'full' Secure Path product.

Oh, I see.
I have never seen one directing multiple adapters to the same controller port, so I don't have any experience with it.

What adapters have you put into your servers? Can you execute the 'nsShow' command on one of the switches and post it as an attachment? (.TXT only, no .DOC, please)

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Karthik,
thanks for the 'nsShow' output, but it turns out that a vague idea was invalid - never mind.

About your zoning, you should still be fine if you either remove 'bootalias' or '1,0; 1,1; 1,2; 2,1; 2,2' from zone 'bootzone'. If you decide to remove 'bootalias', you can also delete the alias itself.

--
The MSA1000 controller does auto-sensing. According to your 'switchShow' output they are running fabric protocol, because the switch port is an 'F_Port'.
> port 1: id N2 Online F-Port 10:00:00:00:c9:39:7b:8a

You could also connect to the serial port at the front of the controller and do a 'SHOW THIS_CONTROLLER'. The default speed is 19200.

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

Thanks Uwe,

In the afternoon I was trying out various configurations,

1) Only with 'bootalias' which contains port WWNs
2) Only "bootzone" with the members as '1,0; 1,1; 1,2; 2,1; 2,2' ports only
3) Bootzone with the members as "bootalias" and also the ports '1,0; 1,1; 1,2; 2,1; 2,2'

All of the above just works fine ..!!

But since I had problems with SAN boot of MSA1000 - FC2101 I have temporarily disabled the configuration. But still no luck with the emulex scsi bios (it can't see the MSA LUNs yet with in the bios but can see from the OS)

Thanks,

Re: Devices are not seen after zoning (MSA1000-DL580-SAN2/8)

When you are running within the adapter BIOS - can you do a 'switchShow' to see what protocol the adapter speaks in this situation? If it is 'L_Port' I would change the topology in the adapter. Also, make sure you are trying to boot from the adapter that is connected to the *active* MSA1000 controller.
