I began with an EVA4400 Starter Kit which comprises the controller and one enclosure. This was filled with 12 x 400GB 10K FC disks and is in a production environment. Later, I added a second enclosure which was filled with 12 x 1TB FATA disks for near-line archiving.
I want to expand by adding 2 x enclosures and I also want to improve redundancy by adding 4 x 400GB 10K and 4 x 1TB FATA drives. This gives me a total of 16 of each disk type.
I have been told that I should change the physical layout so that my 400GB 10K FC disks are in bays 1, 2, 3 and 4 of each of the four enclosures and the 1TB FATAs in bays 9 through 12 - so, horizontal to vertical.
How in the name of Bilbo Baggins do I do that? I've searched nooks, crannies and hobbit holes on the InterWebNet and found lots of stuff but nothing really answering my question.
Does anybody have any ideas, please?

Re: EVA 4400 - horizontal to vertical
4 disk enclosures will not give you full enclosure redundancy, but however, consider to shutdown the array and sort your disks, the array will find them and continue. Likely it will do several levelings after this.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: EVA 4400 - horizontal to vertical
Hi
First you add the new enclosures and disks you can do this online just put 4 disks in each new enclosure. Then you have to check how the RSS are distributed between the disks there should be 2 RSS of 8 disks in each disk group. When you have all your RSS mapped you shutdown the EVA (power down ) rearrange the disks according to the RSS that is 2 disks of each RSS in each disk enclosure. And then power on the EVA. You should be OK now

Re: EVA 4400 - horizontal to vertical
Thanks for the responses. Just to clarify, here's my current layout (controller is at the bottom, enclosure 1 (E1) is on top of that, enclosure 2 (E2) on top of E1 - new enclosures E3 and E4 on top again:
Key: FAn = FATA disk number n
Key: FCn = 400GB 10K FC disk number n
Key: mt = empty bay
E4 - empty, not connected, not powered on
E3 - empty, not connected, not powered on
E2
FA1 FA4 FA7 FA10
FA2 FA5 FA8 FA11
FA3 FA6 FA9 FA12
E1
FC1 FC4 FC7 FC10
FC2 FC5 FC8 FC11
FC3 FC6 FC9 FC12
So my new disks, still in the box, would be
FA13, FA14, FA15, FA16
FC13, FC14, FC15, FC16
What I'm aiming for is:
E4
FCn FCn mt FAn
FCn mt mt FAn
FCn mt FAn FAn
Same for E3, E2 and E1
Torsten says, shut down and sort disks. It will be great if it is as easy as that but which disks go where?
giladzzz advises to identify the RSS membership (how?, please) and then two disks in each enclosure - unsure where other disks then go.
Sorry if I don't seem to be understanding what you say - can't afford for this to go wrong, of course.
TIA,
Dave

Regarding RSS see
Go to field service page and click

Hope this helps!

Re: EVA 4400 - horizontal to vertical
Hi
First of all the EVA configuration is on the disks this means that if all disks are configured and you power down the EVA and mix them in any order the EVA should come up normally.
as for RSS each disk group is divided into RSS that is groups of disks that are by default 8 and can range from 6 to 12
inside the RSS the EVA spreads the raids. If you open SSSU windows connect to the EVA and do ls disk full from this out put you can see what you need.
rssindex .............................: 0
rssid ................................: 15
That is the rssid is the RSS group and the rssindex is the member within the group.
Now after you have added your new disks into disk groups and done "ls disk full" you plan where each disk will be seated and then power down your EVA insert the disks according to your plan and power on the EVA.
I hope it's clear now.
Regards

Re: EVA 4400 - horizontal to vertical
OK, I got the RSS details. The FC drives are RSS ID 1 and 2, all in enclosure 1, six disks in each, FATA RSS ID 3 and 4, six disks, all in enclosure 2.
So how do I sort my disks?
n = new disk
En = Enclosure n - E1 on bottom, E4 top
numbers = RSS ID
Layout 1?
1 2 n n n n 3 4
1 2 n n n n 3 4
1 2 1 2 3 4 3 4
1 2 1 2 3 4 3 4
Layout 2?
1 n 2 n n 4 n 3
1 n 2 n n 4 n 3
1 1 2 2 4 4 3 3
1 1 2 2 4 4 3 3
or some other layout?
TIA,
Dave C

SolutionThe goal is to have a single RSS member per enclosure, but you need 8 shelfs or more to get this working.
From this point of view it doesn't matter. Just spread the disks accross all enclosures. It is nice to have group members in a row, but doesn't matter. It is up to you if you do layout 1 or 2.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: EVA 4400 - horizontal to vertical
Much appreciated.
Incidentally, the /fieldserve method to get to RSS seems to be easiest.
Cheers,
