EVA4400 unable to update firmware

Hi Everyone, i'm encountering a slew of weirdness from our EVA4400, 2x HSV300 with 2 M6412 disk shelves.  It's running 09534000, which i realize is out of date, and also why we're trying to update it.  The trouble is, when i go to update it via Command View, (i've tried both 9.3 and 10.3 versions, with the same result largely)  some weird things happen.

From the storage system home page in CV EVA, i click 'system options', then 'code load system', then 'code load storage system'.  When i press 'select', a dialogue box pops up that says, "If you continue, you will upgrade the firmware on all eligible disk drives in your system. This process may take a significant amount of time, depending on the number of drives. are you sure you wish to continue?"

Now that's strange, i go to upgrade controller firmware and it think's im about to update disk firmware?  So i figure why don't i try the other option from the 'code load system' menu  "code load disk drives online".  I click this and press select, Now it says "If you continue you will upgrade your storage system's controllers and other components.  Both controllers will also restart.  Are you sure you wish to continue?"

Seems fine so far, right? (besides being in the wrong menu) so i click through this and continue as if everything's normal (remember i've done this same procedure in both 9.3 and 10.3)    It asks me if i can verify that my storage system is in good health and blah blah blah, i click through that and it runs the automated storage system verification, which fails because i have 2 inactive host ports, big deal.  I click 'next step', and go to choose a file to upload.  I then get the following error from the 9.3 attempt of this procedure:  "Operation Failed:  Failed to get storage cell".  Doing the above again in 10.3 i get a different error at the same step that says my P6000 command view is running on port 2374 and that i need to connect to that to proceed.  I'm already on 2374 in 10.3, so that makes no sense whatsoever.

if anyone has the slightest idea what's going on, or has another method of upgrading controller firmware, i'd really appreciate any insight.  Feel free to look at the attached set of reports.

Thanks!

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

Hi

first of all you need to upgrade to version XCS10001000 and then to the latest version

that is XCS11200000 check SPOCK site for upgrade paths

also you can try doing the upgrade from the network connection on the controller

but you need to first upgrade the managment module to latest version.

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

You maybe have a problem with your browser?

What version is used?

Hope this helps!

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

Good idea Giladzzz, I forgot you could do upgrades via the onboard management card. I'll give that a shot and report back.

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

Well i've tried (all at the latest versions) Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer, all yield the same result. I've also tried from just the local management station via chrome only. Possibly i'll try firefox from the management appliance later today. Thanks!

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

As sayed:

You have to Upgrade to 10001000 first.

It is not Supportet to got direct to 11200000.

Look in: HP P6000 Enterprise Virtual Array Compatibility Reference Edition 41

If You are not sure what you do please read:

HP Enterprise Virtual Array Updating ProductSoftware Guide (XCS 111200000)

You have to Update the WOCP first (for example, also in Steps)

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

Yes indeed.  I have done so, but just realized i forgot to report back.  We're at 1120000 now, and basically my long-term fix has been to just do disk firmware updates via the onboard management rather than going through the management station.  No problems with that method so far :)

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

Well now i'm in a pickle, the Onboard management has started doing the same thing as the management station command view, where i just can't seem to upgrade any firmware due to the issues described at the beginning of this thread. Could this possibly be Java related? I've had to downrev my Java version to 6.X from 7.X for an unrelated problem on another platform. I'll try the same procedure from a different machine running Java 7 and see what happens.

Re: EVA4400 unable to update firmware

One last update: The issue appears to be browser related after all, so a big thank you goes out to Torsten.  I had a co-worker running Safari on MacOSX have the same problem i had on Google Chrome where the "controller firmware" would open the dialogue box for disk firmware, and vice versa. We then both tried it on Firefox and IE on separate computers and both worked flawlessly.
No more worries here.  If anyone else has the same issue on all browsers that I once did, just update your controller firmware via the onboard management port, then try IE and firefox to manage it afterwards.  It should work!
