Expand a Vdisk?

I am very new to SAN's and EVA software... I am looking to expand Capacity to a VDisk and would like to know how. Under a Vdisk Properties I see Capacity with a Requested: option. Can I just up the amount and will it expand the disk on the fly or do I need to allocate a new one and migrate the data.

Yes, you can just increase the number in the "Requested".


The thing you ened to be careful with is your OS. Does your OS handle increases in Disk Size?

On Windows, you need the admin tools (?) installed. Use the "DISKPART" command to expand a disk.

I would test it first with a 5gb test virtual disk presented to a test system, then increase it to say, 7gb, etc.

I've expanded an exchange data partition by 5gb on the fly by first increasing the virtual disk by 5gb, then using DISKPART. You also have to "Rescan for disks" in computer management\disk management.

Diskpart is downloadable from Microsoft for Windows 2000.

Diskpart comes with Windows 2003 as part of the OS (same for Win XP).

DON'T try to use the 2000 version on 2003 or vice versa.

The OS is Windows 2003 with Veritas Disk manager. I was able to create a new disk and present it to the server as 20gb. I then went ahead and reallocated to 25GB. I don't think I should use the diskpart if Veritas is being used but was not able to expand the volume via Veritas either.

I have little experience with VVM, but I think you need to have a dynamic Disk in order to expand from witnin VEA. If you have the disk set up as a basic disk, you can still use diskpart.
