Has anyone experienced failure of 900GB 12G SAS 15K SFF. The spare part no is 841505-001 Model N9X96A.
I had a failure of this disk twice within a span of one month on my MSA 2052 SAN storage.
The drive firmware is HPD4.
Any suggestion/recommendations would be appreicated.
Thank you.

Re: Failure of 900GB SAS drive on MSA2052
Hi Diago,
The spare part # 841505-001 is that of a 800GB SSD drive.
https://partsurfer.hpe.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=841505-001 (800GB SAS Solid State Drive (SSD) - 12Gbps interface, 2.5in small form factor (SFF), mixed use (MU) - For use with MSA products)
Is the issue with this 800GB or 900GB drive?
If 900GB do share the MODEL Number of the 900GB drive.
But, if it is with the 800GB SSD having spare part # 841505-001, let us know the HPE model #.
The following 3 models have same spare part # of 841505-001 & assembly part # N9X96A.
MO000800JWFWP HPE MSA 800GB 12G SAS MIXED USE SFF (2.5IN) 3YR WARRANTY SOLID STATE DRIVE SFF N9X96A 841505-001 HPD5
MO000800JWTBR HPE MSA 800GB 12G SAS MIXED USE SFF (2.5IN) 3YR WARRANTY SOLID STATE DRIVE SFF N9X96A 841505-001 HPD7
MO0800JFFCH HPE MSA 800GB 12G SAS MIXED USE SFF (2.5IN) 3YR WARRANTY SOLID STATE DRIVE SFF N9X96A 841505-001 HPD8

Re: Failure of 900GB SAS drive on MSA2052
Hi RinuRajan,
Thank you for your reply.
Apologies, the correct part number is 873371-001 Model Q1H47A. HPE MSA 900GB 12G SAS 15K SFF (2.5IN) ENTERPRISE.
What I noticed and that may help HPE to diagonise the failure, the effected hard disk is model EH000900JWCPN. Both the failures have happened with this particular model.
We do have same type specs SAS drive with model EH000900JWHPP. We didn't notice any failure on this drive.
We ordered 13x900gb 12G SAS 15K SFF. But what we received was 11x900gb EH000900JWHPP and 2x900gb EH000900JWCPN.
Thank you.

Re: Failure of 900GB SAS drive on MSA2052
Hi Diago,
Thank you for confirming the drive model # as EH000900JWCPN.
We are not aware of any frquent failure issue reported for this model "EH000900JWCPN" MSA drive.
This could be an exceptional case where the drives failed due to an older firmware "HPD4" in the drives.
Latest firmware is available for this MSA drive which is HPD6(4 Nov 2020).
Following issue was fixed in firmware HPD5 (13 Jun 2019) & HPD6(4 Nov 2020).
- This update improves performance for random read workloads with delays between reads.
- New servo which disables a feature that could cause unrecoverable data errors.
- A fix for an issue where the drive could become unresponsive after a hard reset.
If this model drive still exists in the MSA - you can plan for getting the MSA drive firmware upgraded to the latest version to ensure that the drive do not fail due to the above issues.
Hope this helps!

Re: Failure of 900GB SAS drive on MSA2052
Hi Diago,
Also, to check for overall health and firmware status on your system you can use our new MSA Health Check Tool: www.hpe.com/storage/MSAHealthCheck
Download your MSA STORELOG file from your MSA array
Upload the MSA Log File into the MSA Health Check website
Review the results by clicking through the tabs and by saving as PDF report
Individual model specific links to array, enclosure, and drive firmware are provided for easy access.

Re: Failure of 900GB SAS drive on MSA2052
Thank you RinuRajan, your explantion about drive firmware update make lots of sense. I shall do the drive firmware update.
Quick question. Can I do the drive firmware update during lean IO time like after office hours? Does it need a reboot of MSA or shutdown of VMs?
Does upgrade of enclosure need a reboot of MSA?
Thank you.
