Are there any special steps required to move a library that is fibre attached to a server to a fibre channel?

What is the OS on the server?


You will need to take into consideration the zoning on the SAN Switch. It will probably need to be modified to allow the server to see the NSR, or implemented to make sure other servers do NOT see the NSR.

Your mappings should be ok since you are not changing the HBA in the server.

I'd expect the Windows would just re-discover the drive(s)/library and your backup software wold just continue along without issues or perhaps only minor config changes in your backup device config.

One last question. Would you directly attach the library to the fibre channel and the server vias gigabit, or would you attach the library via fibre to the server and the server to the fibre channel via gigabit? Just curious what the advantages are for each.

For best utilization and performance, you should connect both the server and the Library to a Fibre Channel SAN Switch. This would also allow sharring of the librtary with other servers so that you could backup you data over fibre channel, even if your other servers aren't using Fibre Channel based Storage... you can drop a single FC-HBA into them, connect to a SAN switch, and they can write data from their local storage right to the Library without saturating the LAN. SAN backup's tend to take up to 50% (or more) less time to complete vs. sending data over ther LAN through the backup server.
