Hardware compatibility - HP server & SAN MSA1000

Hi,

We have this hardware:

  • Servers: HP ProLiant ML350 Generation 5 (G5)
  • SAN: HP StorageWords Modular Smart Array 1000 with Fibre Channel I/O Module.

MSA (MSA1000, 2 controllers) <-> SWITCH <-> HBA: SERVIDOR (ML350 G5)

We need to know what HP servers are hardware compatibility with this SAN.

Thanks in advance to everyone who will read and comment this post.

Best regards.

Re: Hardware compatibility - HP server & SAN MSA1000

Such an old device ...

Quickspecs will list supported servers, mostly G2 to G4.

Hope this helps!

I know.

Quickspecs will list supported servers, mostly G2 to G4.

https://www.islandco.com/quickspecs/msa1000_quickspecs.pdf

Extracted from quickspecs:

Supports most 32-bit ProLiant servers including BL20P G2, BL20P G3,
BL25P, BL30P, BL35P, BL40P, DL145. DL360, DL360 G2, DL360 G3,
DL360 G4, DL380, DL380 G2, DL380 G3, DL380 G4, DL385, DL560,
DL580, DL580 G2, DL580 G3, DL585, DL740, DL760, DL760 G2,
ML330, ML330 G2, ML330 G3, ML350, ML350 G2, ML350 G3, ML350
G4, ML370, ML370 G2, ML370 G3, ML370 G4, ML530, ML530 G2,
ML570, ML570 G2, ML750.

¿G2 or G4 servers are older than our ProLiant ML350 Generation 5 (G5), aren´t?

Re: Hardware compatibility - HP server & SAN MSA1000

I want to change the servers to "improve", not because are damaged, so I´m trying to find newer server models than G5 which are compatible with this SAN.

Best regards.

Re: Hardware compatibility - HP server & SAN MSA1000

Question is if you want to stay wth this old equipment or if you want really new systems (like Gen9 and Gen10 servers).

In this case you should consider a MSA1000 or MSA2000 in G5. (MSA1050/MSA2050).

Hope this helps!

Re: Hardware compatibility - HP server & SAN MSA1000

I know that is an old infrastructure. We want to keep MSA1000 and try to improve server infrastructure.

I also know that Gen9 or Gen10 are better servers, but if they aren´t compatible with MSA1000, it´s not possible to do this.

We are looking for the "best" server generation compatible with MSA1000.

I cannot see a good reason for this.

Maybe you want to consider something like a used MSA2000 G3 (P2000) - starting at around 2000€ at ebay including controllers and disks?

So you could use some newer servers (G7, Gen8).

For the old stuff you will not get any current software, OS, driver, firmware, even parts ...

Hope this helps!

I agree with you, but it´s not my decision.

According to the compatible servers listed on quickspecs doc, if we keep MSA1000, I think that we can´t improve server infraestructure because G2 to G4 models are older than our G5 server.  Is this rigth?

Re: Hardware compatibility - HP server & SAN MSA1000

G is generation, so G2 is older than G3 and so on ... current is Gen10.

AFAIK oldest supported generation is currently G7.

Hope this helps!
