MSA 2040 ADDING Additional Disk to existing RAID 5 and Expansion of volume

Dear Friends,

I am new to HP MSA storage. But I do have good knowledge on NetApp Storage and EMC Storages.

We have one HP MSA 2040 SAN with 12 HDD, now we are planning to add 4 more HDD to existing RAID (5) and increase the volume size.

Can some one please tell me if we need any downtime need for HOSTs to perform volume expation or if we can perform online expation? In NetApp / EMC it is prety stright forward, volume can be increased online.

Much apriciated for your support.

Thanks and Regards,

Pruthviraj

You should get the latest

" MSA 1040/2040 SMU Reference Guide"

for step by step instructions.

Hope this helps!

Re: MSA 2040 ADDING Additional Disk to existing RAID 5 and Expansion of volume

Hi!

I have read the suggested manual but I don't find if there's any kind of action to take before inserting the new disks. I understand that there's no action to take, only to insert the drives properly. Any suggestion?

Thanks in advance

You should be able to do it online if the host's connected to the SAN support it.

AFAIK, you can expand disk groups on the MSA 2040 (add disks) if they are linear volumes, however if I recall you cannot do this with volumes on virtual disk groups.

After adding the disks, wait for the completion of the operation and then rescan the storage on the hosts, the added space should be available.
