Hello,
I have a MSA 2040 (2 controllers) with one existing disk group composed by 14 SSD SAS 800gb + 1 spare SSD SAS 800gb in linear raid6 configuration and divided into 2 volumes.
I just added 8 SSD SAS 1.6Tb and I want create a new disk group with these 8 SSD but I can't clic on "add disk groupe". It shows me "must install a performance tier license".
What is the procedure to create a new disk group in this configuration ?
Thank you.

Re: MSA 2040 - Can't add disk group
Hello @valentinp,
Performance tiering license is required to configure SSDs and HDDs as Virtual Disk Groups within the same system (not necessarily Pool). Without this license, the system can be configured to use SSDs as either an all-flash array or as Read Cache.
This license is sold as part of the Advanced Data Service Suite.
HPE Advanced Data Services (ADS) Software Suite include:
тАв Performance Tiering and Archive Tiering Software
тАв 512 Snapshots and Volume Copy Software
тАв Remote Snap Software
Please refer this URL for more details or to buy the license :

Srinivas Bhat

Re: MSA 2040 - Can't add disk group
Hello @sbhat09, Thx for replying.
I'm not mixing SSD and HDD in my MSA.
I have 15 SSD 800GB in one group disks. I just added 8 new SSD 1.6TB and I want to create a new group disks with these 8 SSD. Is it possible or do I need to extand existing group disks ?

Re: MSA 2040 - Can't add disk group
As @sbhat09 says: ...within the same system (not necessarily Pool) ...
This means SAS & SSD inside the same MSA Storage System needs this License.
No matter, if it is inside the same Pool or Disk Group and no matter if you use Tiering or not.
Only an all SSD without any SAS does not need the License.
Sorry, Cali

SolutionSorry, you are right, I only read the Post above.
Notice this:
- The Performance Auto Tiering License is not required in Linear Storage configurations not utilizing Virtual Storage Disk-Groups and Pools.
- Creating an SSD virtual disk group for both read and write capabilities requires a Performance Auto Tiering License.
Your existing Disks is a Type Linear Pool, I think you try to create a Virtual DG/Pool.
Maybe the new GUI doesn't offer Linear anymore.
Try to use CLI: add disk-group type linear disks 1.17-24 level r6 dg02

Re: MSA 2040 - Can't add disk group
i think so NO, you can't create even if you have SSD.
