MSA2312FC - LFF SATA 500GB DISKS - firmware upgrade - problem

Hi all
In my MSA 2312 FC I have 12 x 500GB LFF Disks with different revision SN02, SN04, SN05, SN06
(see attachement disks)

I downloaded firmware: HP_ST3500514NS_SN12.fla   (HP_ST3500514NS_SN12.fla (1.6 MB))  for these disks:
http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=3882363&swItemId=MTX_4c844b049b40497aa9401c6e1b&swEnvOid=4064

After trying to upgrade disks firmware through web interface
i got an error like "....no capable disks for update..."

So i thought that I/O should be disabled for this array

After disabling both storage controllers for stopping I/O operations
I cannot login to the web interface of our MSA with comunicate:
"...system is not available..."

i can login through SSH but coannot start storage controllers:

# restart sc both
During the restart process you will briefly lose communication with the specified Storage Controller(s).
Continue? y
Error: The Storage Controller is not ready for the operation.
#

Ho to properly upgrade firmware all of the 12 disks?
how to proper stop I/O oprations for all of the the disks? (instead of disabling both storage controllers)

########################

I tried to flash first disk from first enclosure through ftp:

First of all i disabled both storage controllers:

login as: manage
# shutdown both
Info: Shutting down SC both...
Success: Command completed successfully.
#

Next I logged in from my Windows machine

C:\>ftp xxx.xxx.xxx.125
Connected to xxx.xxx.xxx.125.
214-FTP server ready
....

....

230 User logged in
ftp> put SN12.fla disk:1:1 flash

Found a disk at enclosure = 1, slot = 1.

The packaged disk firmware file is valid.

So  - where exctly is the problem if my new firmware from HP website is valid? (" The packaged disk firmware file is valid")

Thanks in advance

Re: MSA2312FC - LFF SATA 500GB DISKS - firmware upgrade - problem

If you stop the SC, you can no longer talk to the disks.

You should make sure the servers don't "talk" to the array, so there is no I/O traffic, but don't shutdown the array.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: MSA2312FC - LFF SATA 500GB DISKS - firmware upgrade - problem

Thanks Torsten - so you think that it is a good idea to disable all FC connections to the FC switch?

(for example I will disconnect all FC cables from MSA controllers)

Re: MSA2312FC - LFF SATA 500GB DISKS - firmware upgrade - problem

The problem is if you upgrade all the disks at once and the array is busy the raid may become inconsistent because of the individual disk restarts. The update is not an online task like in EVA, 3PAR, etc...

Disable the switch ports may be a solution ...

Hope this helps!

Hi Torsten

I disconnected all FC patchcords from our MSA2312 but without success...

No matter if I tried to uprade disk firmware one by one or whole number of disks together,

and no matter if i tried upgrade firmware from http interface or through FTP  -

i got the same error here is the session ftom FTP:

I restarted both management controllers and both storage controllers

and made another attempt to upgrade disks firmware -  without success...

Re: MSA2312FC - LFF SATA 500GB DISKS - firmware upgrade - problem

I wonder why I cannot see a checkmark in the first column for the first disk?

The disk is ST3500320NS, but the downloads

are for different disks.

Hope this helps!

Re: MSA2312FC - LFF SATA 500GB DISKS - firmware upgrade - problem

According to your screenshot this is a valid firmware file, but you don't have a disk that matches this file.

You cannot mark all files, because you have different disks, you cannot load the same (wrong) file to different disks.

I wonder where to find the file for ST3500320NS.

EDIT:

Found it

Re: MSA2312FC - LFF SATA 500GB DISKS - firmware upgrade - problem

Many thanks Torsten!

Now 11 disks have firmware SN06
only one disk left for upgrade it is slot 9 - ST500NM0011
and after half an hour digging through HP web site I'm
one again confused...

I have many results for 500GB disks but not exactly for ST500NM0011...

Maybe you will have more luck and you will be able to find ST500NM0011 firmware?

One info about cp011335.exe -
after upgrade i got a message that 11 disks from 1:1 to 1:12 (without 1:9)
were succesully flashed - that was not a truth -
it was necessary to flash disks from slots 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 manually  one by one
through web interface.
