Msa1040 disk replacement and firmware update

Hi,
I have a question about replacing a failed drive with a msa1040.
The firmware upgrade of the disks is a process offline.

MSA 1040/2040 disk drive firmware update best practices
• Disk drive upgrades on the HP MSA storage systems 1040/2040 is an off-line process. All host and array I / O must be
stopped prior to the upgrade.
• If the drive is in a virtual disk, the Verify That it is not being initialized, expanded, reconstructed, verified, or scrubbed. If any of
These tasks is in progress, before performing the update wait for the task to complete or terminate it. Also the Verify That
background scrub is disabled know That it does not start. You can determinates this using SMU or CLI interfaces. If using a
firmware smart component, it would fail and report if any of the above pre-requisites are not being met.
• Disk drives of the same model in the storage system must have the same firmware revision. If using a smart firmware
component, the installer would Ensure all the drives are updated.

Taken from the document Technical white paper HP MSA 1040/2040 Best Practices.

My question is as follows:

If I have to replace a failed disk that has a different firmware than the existing disks as I do?
I would first upgrade the firmware and then configure it as a spare?
Or I have to configure it as a spare and then power off the hosts and do the firmware update?

The guide HP MSA Drive Module Replacement Instructions not very clear as the following statement

Updating firmware
After installing any new component, the Verify That it is
running the latest firmware.
Go to the HP Support Center website and navigate to
the HP 2040 or HP MSA 1040 MSA enclosure model.
If newer firmware is available, download the firmware
from the Web to your local system and install the latest
version on the drive. For more information on firmware
updates, see the applicable SMU reference guide, CLI
reference guides, user guides or product listed under
Resource

is put at the end after writing to put the new disk as a spare.

thanks

greetings

Re: Msa1040 disk replacement and firmware update

IMHO it is safe to update the disk if the disk does not belong to a vdisk. Remember, the disk could be a different model with the same specs (so it is the same part), check carefully if there is new firmware!

Hope this helps!

Re: Msa1040 disk replacement and firmware update

Thanks for the reply,

So in the event of a disk failure the first thing I have to update the firmware and then configure it as a spare.

Correct?

thanks

Re: Msa1040 disk replacement and firmware update

It is a good chance because a just replaced disk is not in use.

Most of the times the new disk has current firmware, but the existing disks are old ... that's the problem.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.
