Need guidance setting up an EVA 5000....
I used to work on these things a long time ago, so I decided to pick one up at auction to see if I could get it going for my storage needs.
I have a full EVA 5000 in the 42u rack all cabled up and ready to go. I only have 28 500gb FC disks to start with, but will fill the cabinet if I can get this thing working.
What I need to know is how to talk to this thing and setup the LUN's and present them to the servers. I know I used to be able to do this in my sleep, but that was about 10 years ago and I do not recall what I used to do all of that with.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I now run my own IT Support company and have less time than I would like to research this thing.
Thanks in advance for the support. I am not able to get on my own PC regularly, but will try to respond as quickly as I can.

Re: Need guidance setting up an EVA 5000....
Sounds like a fun project!
First thing you'll need is to install Command View on a server with fibre channel connectivity to the controllers.
Then you need to add the WWN+checksum in the OCP if it's not already there.
See this document about disk placements:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=110&prodSeriesId=321347&prodTypeId=12169&objectID=c01391538
Command View 9.4 can be gotten from http://software.hp.com
You may want to check out which VCS firmware is installed - this can be seen in the OCP too.
License is needed for CV 9.4 - but there is a 60 day trial period for you to get things working.
I think after you got Command View installed, how to create disk group, vdisk, add hosts and present vdisks should come back quite quickly. If not, there are user guides :)

Re: Need guidance setting up an EVA 5000....
Thanks Johan,
Sorry for not getting back here earlier. Apparently I did not subscribe to my own post and when I posted I had been up for way too many hours to count and I could not recall what site I was on when I posted about getting this EVA online.
Well, I am back now and I just have a couple of questions.
When I go to the "Demonstration and Evaluation Software" site, there is nothing listed for an EVA 5000. Will the Command View for the EVA 6000 see an EVE 5000 and work?
I looked at the "HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 5000/8000/8100 disk placement guidelines" page and I was wondering what would be the best way to populate when I am starting with only 28 drives. I just stuck them in shelf 1 and 2 when I started, but should I put then in shelf 1 and 7 for better performance?
I have not checked the VCS firmware yet because I jsut powered up the EVA after being off for a while and it's doing a recovery and I cannot see anything. I will get that information as soon as I can. Can you tell me what version I need to be on?
Thanks, Tom.

OK, it looks like the VCS version is 3110.

Re: Need guidance setting up an EVA 5000....
Hi, no worries :)
Download Command View from the software depot: http://software.hp.com , don't know what site you're talking about.
You want to check the release notes of Command View. Start with 9.4 - that one supports VCS code. I think Command View 10 does not.
There are recommendations where you should install the controller enclosures too. In the advisory I linked originally the controllers are on EAB id 7. If you stay on VCS 3 it doesn't really matter if you have them on two different ids, they'll still be managed by the active controller.
Are both disk enclosures going to be on two loops - one per controller?
More info about active/active and upgrades: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Disk-Array/EVA5000-FW-upgrade-to-version-4-0/td-p/4775962
In case you want to go to 4.1:
Link to VCS 4.1 is in this topic: http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Storage-Area-Networks-SAN/Where-i-can-download-the-firmware-VCS-4-100-for-an-EVA-3000/td-p/4382106

Re: Need guidance setting up an EVA 5000....
The site I was talking about is the only link on the page you listed that has any Command View downloads that I could find. When I go to the "Software Depot", i can only find Command View if I click on the "Demonstration and Evaluation Software" link., and that page only shows it for the P6000 series EVA. If you have another page in mind, that would help.
Yes, all enclosures are connected to both controller via the fibre switches. This is a standard EVA 5000 42u as HP would have shipped it. It's a 283199-B23, here are the specs: https://h10057.www1.hp.com/ecomcat/hpcatalog/specs/provisioner/99/283199-B23.htm
I am going to be out of contact for several hours. Will look around more when I get back... Fun running cable drops for a clients office expansion before they drywall on Tuesday.
Thanks, Tom.

Re: Need guidance setting up an EVA 5000....
EVA is called P6000 these days, perhaps causing some confusion for older EVAs.
You're on the right place to download CV then, but there are several versions of Command View in there. Make sure you get the one that is supported with your VCS - version 9.4. It comes with a 60-day trial period.
