Soft Addresses on the A5158A HP PCI Tchyon TL Fibre Channel Adapter

I'm using an A5158A Fibre Channel Adapter with Tape Libraries. When the Tape Library is configured to use hard adresses everything works OK. However when the Tape Library is configured to us soft addresses I get address conflict messages when the system boots and I can't "see" the tape library with IOSCAN. Is there something I have to set on the A5158A to "handle" soft addresses?

Hi Steve,

Take a look at this document; you might find it helpful:

If it doesn't answer your question, you might try posting to the HP-UX forum:

Re: Soft Addresses on the A5158A HP PCI Tchyon TL Fibre Channel Adapter

Hi Steve,

HP-UX codes the device FC address into the hardware path and therefore into the device file. This can be the Loop ID for private loops (FC-AL) or the NPort ID (with connection via switch). In order to ensure to access the device always on the same hardware path one must set hard addresses for devices. HP-UX questions the device for its addressing assignment. If the device has a soft address HP-UX will not accept it as a target.
The HBA will get a soft address. This does not matter because the HBA will not display in the HP-UX I/O tree.
Hope that answers your question.
