We get many questions around performance-testing. Companies dealing with large datasets or big data (think Idea Economy) require performance optimization. Businesses want to know how to optimize, what software to use, and who the experts are with LoadRunner. LoadRunner v12 is a very popular load-testing software suite. Employers are listing LoadRunner certifications and experience in their job postings. Even companies that don’t use LoadRunner use the LoadRunner skill sets as a competency gauge. LoadRunner has a wide range of supported protocols and is one of the best-licensed performance testing tools on the market. Google search “LoadRunner” and you will be amazed by the number of pages filled with content for perspective LoadRunner candidates. There is even a Wikipage dedicated to HP LoadRunner.

If you’re wondering, “what exactly is LoadRunner,” here’s a quick overview. LoadRunner is the Hewlett Packard Enterprise industry-standard software solution for application performance and load testing. LoadRunner helps you prevent issues by detecting bottlenecks, and it gives you an accurate picture of end-to-end system performance before going live.

The LoadRunner tool is extremely flexible for organizations and projects of all sizes, allowing you to test a range of applications, including mobile, Ajax, Flex, HTML 5, .NET, Java, GWT, Silverlight, SOAP, Citrix, ERP, and legacy.

With an intuitive record and playback mechanism, including the patented TruClient technology, LoadRunner reproduces real business processes that a user would perform in production. It then emulates hundreds or thousands of concurrent virtual users, with minimal hardware, to apply accurate workloads to any application. After the test completes, the LoadRunner analysis engine provides a single view of end-user response time, infrastructure-level, and code-level performance; and supports identification of the most likely causes of performance issues.

There are two LoadRunner certifications:

  1. HP ATP –LoadRunner v12
  2. HP ASE –LoadRunner v12

This blog post will cover the ATP certification.. There are no prerequisites for either LoadRunner certification. The certification path you choose depends on your level of experience with the tool.

HP ATP – LoadRunner v12

This certification is designed for individuals with at least six months of hands-on LoadRunner experience and who’ve completed the recommended Essentials training or acquired equivalent knowledge. Successful achievement is an indication that the candidate is ready to join field engagements under the supervision of a mentor. Training is offered through HPE Software Education Services training centers. (There are alternative options for HPE employees and registered HPE Partners.)

The HP(E)0 exams are test-center-proctored exams and must be taken through Pearson VUE testing centers.

The HP ATP LoadRunner certification requires one exam to demonstrate capability in multiple skill sets. The exam validates the performance engineer’s ability to describe how to plan load tests; create, enhance, and debug Web Vusers; create and execute load scenarios to emulate real user behavior; and analyze run results with HPE LoadRunner.
The HP ATP – LoadRunner v12 exam costs between $100 and $200, depending on your region. Read the full Exam Prep Guide  to find out more about the LoadRunner v12 (HP0-M103) exam.

For professionals who already hold the HP AIS - LoadRunner v11 (inactive) certification, there’s a lower-cost and lower-stakes path to acquiring the HP ATP – LoadRunner v12 certification.

HP ATP - LoadRunner v12 - upgrade from HP AIS - LoadRunner v11

The HP ATP - LoadRunner v12 - upgrade from HP AIS - LoadRunner v11 lets performance engineers revalidate their previously certified performance-validation skills on the latest version of LoadRunner, to reaffirm their professional interest in performance validation and demonstrate their ability to cope with evolving technology. The HP ATP - LoadRunner v12 – upgrade from HP AIS – LoadRunner v11 helps them protect their investment in HPE certifications against inevitable skills decay over time.

To receive the HP ATP – LoadRunner v12 certification, consultants who meet the prerequisite (HP AIS – LoadRunner v11) only have to pass the HP2-N53 exam, administered online by Pearson VUE. The exam verifies that your general LoadRunner knowledge and skills are current and validates your knowledge of new and additional features in LoadRunner version 12.

The HP ATP – LoadRunner v12 – upgrade from HP AIS – LoadRunner v11 exam costs between $50 and $100, depending on your region. Read the Exam Prep Guide to find out more about the LoadRunner v12 Upgrade (HP2-N53) exam.

Every company I’ve worked for has run performance load tests on new and existing applications. Before LoadRunner, we had to run very complex tests with no real benchmarks to determine the real performance bottlenecks on applications. With LoadRunner, all the guesswork is removed. Anyone interested in application development or building an IT environment to support complex applications will want to add LoadRunner to their resume. Your resume and LoadRunner skillsets will be highly valued.

Have you achieved the HP ATP – LoadRunner v12 certification? How has it helped you in your career? We would like to hear from you in the comments section below.
