Add larger HDD's to storeeasy 1000, 1440 go to total of 40TB

I have a HP storeeasy 1000  model 1440 with total 12 TB storage

I need to update to a total of 40TB's   4X10TB disks.

Can I just buy the new disks and install them one by one and they will automatically rebuild?

Any suggestions on how to make this data transition?

This is a very risky way to get more capacity and I'm not sure it would work. I've asked my experts (internal HPE Storage architects) and if I get a definite answer I'll share it. For now, a few things:

  • The StoreEasy 1450 supports 4 X 4TB drives - there's no option for a 10TB drive. i'm certain the 1440 doesn't support them either.
  • The ability for a RAID controller to use higher capacity drives after you do multiple rebuilds depends on the controller. I know some Smart Array Controllers have a command that after you replace all the drives will let you use the higher capacity of the drives. I don't know if the SA in the 1440 supports capacity expansion.
  • Doing multiple rebuilds is very risky. If I wanted to replace drives in a RAID controller, I would back up the data, put the new drives in and then re-install the data.  HOWEVER NOTE: I'm not sure you can do that with the StoreEasy as I believe the OS is on the drives and I don't know how you can recover that. So withoug more information, I wouldn't recommend doing this at all!
  • I would not recommend removing drives one at a time to upgrade the capacity.

You can expand the capacity of the StoreEasy 1440 by adding an additional enclosure.  From the QuickSpec, to add additional drives, it says this: Support for D3600, D3700, D6000 and D6020 (requires an additional Smart Array controller than the standard SA P440).

Here's an older HP StoreEasy Admin Guide that dates to the 1440.  You might find useful information here.

Just had one of my storage architects reply with a correction on what enclosures are supported with the StoreEasy 1440:

Checked the following https://spock.corp.int.hpe.com/spock/utility/document.aspx?docurl=Shared%20Documents/hw/nas/storeeasy_compatibility_guide.2017_06_21.pdf

The 1440 supports the following add-on enclosures:  D2600, D2700, D6000, D3600, D3700.  What I originally posted were the enclosures supported by the 1450 and obviously the list is different.

Sorry just to confirm the link above is an internal only one. The external facing link is here

Appologies :)
