Flexibility Is the Key To Survival! Adapt to Change With the HP 5400R zl2 Switch Series!

By Lauren McAndrews, Channel Product Marketing, HP Networking

Lauren McAndrews

HP Networking recently introduced the new 5400R zl2 Switch Series as the Cisco Catalyst 4500E Killer. While some might consider this an overly-aggressive statement, there are a variety of factors that contribute to the 5400R zl2 outperforming the Cisco 4500E. Out of all of the benefits attributed to the 5400R zl2 Switch Series, flexibility is one of its most distinctive. When comparing the Cisco switch to the HP Networking solution, it’s apparent the 5400R zl2 provides your business with greater flexibility.

Why the 5400R zl2 Switch Series is considered to be more flexible

  • Flexible connectivity options with 6 or 12 slot compact chassis for up to 96 ports of 10GbE (SFP+ and 10GBASE-T), up to 288 1GbE ports and up to 288 ports of PoE+ (9,250 W total PoE+ power budget).
  • Nonstop switching and routing for improved support of applications such as unified communications and enhanced L3 high availability.
  • Redundant management, fabric and power provide enhanced system availability and continuity of operations.
  • Hot-swappable modules and optional redundant power supply provides uninterrupted power and allows swapping of modules with no impact on the network availability.

So what does this increased flexibility mean for you?

The first advantage is that this product can grow and adapt with your company. The 6- and 12- slot compact chassis gives you the ability to quickly meet new network demands for up to 288 1GbE ports and 96 10 GbE ports. Due to the hot-swappable modules, you now have the ability to switch the type of module in each slot without impacting the network availability. Should your business require more switching and routing capabilities, you can fill the slots with modules to address those functions. But if your enterprise requires more than solely switching and routing, you can easily switch out those modules for ones more applicable to your business needs.

The second advantage resides with the flexibility of the power supplies. Three new highly efficient power supplies are introduced with the HP 5400R zl2 Switch Series, the 700W, the 1100W, and the 2750W. The 700W PSU is intended for a low-cost solution for limited PoE ports while the 1100W PSU is meant for midrange PoE installations and the 2750W PSU is intended for full PoE+ installations.

Depending on the needs of your business enterprise, you can be flexible with the choice of which power supply would work best.

The 8 port module (v2) has only 2 channels each supporting up to 23.6 or so Gbs (total 46Gb per module).

Provided is the link to the document refering to this (page 69) which one needs dig to find.

HP Technical White paper

Sad this info isn't stated in the product information guides/user manuals.

Note it's specific to the module and not the chassis switch itself. However, I will be contacting HP for a return for false marketing. I have a swith with 3 10GBase-T and basically 12 ports are useless for my purposes.

The audacity to market that the switch can scale up to 96 10Gb ports (12 mod system) is a false statement.  Be honest and say 10 Gig utilization per module is half that.

A disappointed customer.
