HP-UX 11.3 dual NIC cards only 1 port working
Good Morning,
We are running HP-UX 11.3 (3600 and 1620 devices) and was working fine until 1 month ago. Once our HP-UX 11.3 was taken down for maintenance and brought back online only 1 port on our dual nic card works. Also, there's two other dual nic cards that won't connect as well.
Knowns:
- Multiple Windows based servers on same Vlan as HP-UX NICS a connected to same 3750X switch and are still working.
- No changes/updates on the Networking have been made
Things we've tried:
1) changed out the cables
2) Can ping ip address 12 on first Nic but cannot ping ip address 13, 14 on the other two nics
3) Can ping from 13 to other servers in the same vlan
4) Changed subnet mask on 13 to /16 and was able to ping my workstation
5) Tried connecting directly to the Nexus 9k with copper sfp's, but no success
6) verified Vlan configs on switch
7) Tried changing ports between switches and even tried switching IP addresses

As usual, showing actual commands with their actual output can be
more helpful than vague/inaccurate descriptions or interpretations. For
example:
uname -a
model
> [...] only 1 port on our dual nic card works. Also, there's two other
> dual nic cards that won't connect as well.
Define "works". Define "won't connect". What, exactly, are you
doing? What, exactly, happens when you do it?

I know nothing about your "same vlan", nor the Windows servers, nor
what you did.
> - No changes/updates on the Networking have been made
Perhaps. My guess would be that something changed someplace.
> 1) changed out the cables
Are there LEDs on the hardware which indicate good physical links?
How, exactly, are all these interfaces configured?
lanscan
ifconfig lanX # (X = 0, 1, 2, ...?)
> 2) Can ping ip address 12 on first Nic but cannot ping ip address 13,
> 14 on the other two nics
"12", "13", and "14" are not IP addresses. What are the actual IP
addresses? Netmasks? You can hide all the information you want, but
it's often not helpful.
"cannot ping" is not a useful problem description. As usual, showing
actual commands with their actual output can be more helpful than vague
descriptions or interpretations.
> 3) Can ping from 13 to other servers in the same vlan
I know nothing about your "the same vlan", nor what you did.
> 4) Changed subnet mask on 13 to /16 and was able to ping my
> workstation
I don't know what your old subnet was, nor anything about "my
workstation". If changing a subnet somewhere helped, then I'd wonder if
your subnet specs were defective. But I have no actual information on
anything.
> 6) verified Vlan configs on switch
Swell. Perhaps you know what you're doing and perhaps you don't know
good from bad. Saying that you think something is right is not the same
as exhibiting the actual data, and letting the reader make his own
decision.
> 7) Tried changing ports between switches and even tried switching IP
> addresses
Again, no actual info there.
Normally I might suggest moving a cable from a "bad" port on an HP-UX
system to some handy laptop (or other stray computer) to verify the
hardware and the non-HP-UX configuration(s), but I don't have enough
info to guess how the laptop interface ought to be configured. But, if
you do, then that might tell you whether the problem is in the HP-UX
system or outside it.

Did you check the status of the "nic hardware" within HP-UX? What do you see? Any failures?
Also is it possible that when these extra NICs were configured, the server was already booted up and was operational and that the configuration of these extra NICs was never saved in the startup configuration files? i.e. in the /etc/rc.config.d/netconf file? If that's the case then of course these NIC settings would have been lost when your server was taken down for maintenance.
