HP UX system Not in network

Our UAT is on HP-UX server whose version is 11.31 and Due to maintainence activity we have to shutdown the server.But when we restarted the server it acquired some new IP and that is why we were unable to connect.But when we have taken the console and look out the directory structure in which ifconfig file size was present was of O bytes and there many more files which was of O bytes.Has anyone face this issue before ?????????

I can only think you've missed something in syslog.log

I am thinking you did a network boot to your ignite server or you have a dhcp server and you acquired an dhcp ip address.

It is very unusual to have a server setup to get a new IP address when rebooted. While you can setup HP-UX for DHCP, it is never recommended. I assume that the directory you are looking at is /usr/sbin. Files never change to zero bytes unless someone (with a root login) has destroyed them. This is not a bug in the HP_UX OS, it is a bad script or a bad root user making mistakes or purposely breaking your system.

If you can run the command:

swverify \*

then look at the /var/adm/sw/swverify.log to see how many programs and files have been compromised. You may have to restore from your Ignite-UX backup if the damage is extensive.

Please provide more information. Are you saying /usr/sbin/ifconfig and many other HPUX commands are zero bytes?

Have seen it with a corrupted filesystem and/or disk error.

This looks bad, as Bill said.

Can you look, as Michael mentioned, in
/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log
?
Also, look in
/var/mail/root
and see if any interesting errors in there.
