is PAM necessary if i have winbind and NSS
already running and i just want to share files?

Nope, you are not compelled to use pam_auth for samba with winbind & NSS.

Pam is a good, encrypted authentication program. Since it runs on multiple platforms it allows you to centralize authentication to some degree.

A combination of LDAP and PAM could let you create a single sign on that works on Linux, HP-UX, other UNIX distributions, and a Microsoft Windows Domain controller.

Check that the smb.conf has encrypted pasword = off, because default 2000 clients have unencrypted passwords.(or change the windows reg .

And if it works don't forget to dance the REAL SAMBA Dude...
