NFS Service not starting

Hi,

For some reason NFS stopped working yesturday and when I checked the NFS service was disabled, when I try and start it hangs for five mins and then stops.

I have looked at all the standard files but cant see what is wrong, below is part of my syslog.log file for today which shows a error about BIND.

Re: NFS Service not starting

Check your /etc/services file and see if the following 2 lines are there.  If not, add them and try again.

nfsd 2049/udp # NFS remote file system
nfsd 2049/tcp # NFS remote file system

Re: NFS Service not starting

Just for the sake of completeness: the error message does not refer to BIND the DNS server, but to the bind(2) system call.

bind(2) is used to assign a particular IP address and/or port number to a network socket before starting to use it. It is usually used when setting up a network service to receive incoming connections, but can be used for outgoing connections too, if needed.

Just before the errors you noticed, nfsd makes a netdir_getbyname(3N) call, and the parameters indicate it is trying to look up the port number of nfsd from /etc/services. Apparently "I looked but there was none" is not exactly an error for netdir_getbyname(3N).

In the HP-UX circles, there lives a misguided idea of disabling network services by editing the /etc/services file.

In the HP-UX 10.20 era, that used to be the only way to make syslogd stop listening on the network for incoming syslog messages. There might have been a security vulnerability to which this was the accepted workaround.

Apparently someone extrapolated from that, and guessed that it was the standard way to disable services on HP-UX. No, it's not. It is only applicable in one specific case, with an ancient syslog daemon that opens a network socket by default and has no proper option to disable that behavior. The right way to disable a standard network service on HP-UX is by either commenting it out in /etc/inetd.conf or setting an appropriate variable to 0 in the service's configuration file in /etc/rc.config.d/. With third-party add-on software, all bets are off, but unless the add-on comes with a kernel module, there is usually a better way.

(Please try and debunk this misguided idea of removing things from /etc/services whenever you find it.)
