Thanks to all who helped. I also opened a case with HP, and they helped me narrow down the problem to UDP being blocked by the firewall software. The key was:

rpcinfo -t mountd
(worked)
rpcinfo -u mountd
(hung)

After the network group modified their firewall (CheckPoint), the problem went away.
