One NIC card is not detected

Hello Admins,

I have installed RHEL 4 in one of the server which has two NIC cards(both are inbuilt in the motherboard). But during installation, I forgot to put check mark for the option "activate on boot" to eth1. Because of this, the second NIC card(eth1) is not recognized by the server. Can you pls guide me how to make it visibile to OS and make use of that NIC card.

Thanks in advance.

Re: One NIC card is not detected

First: if you enter "ifconfig -a", is the eth1 NIC included in the listing?

If "ifconfig -a" displays the NIC, the NIC driver is loaded and the card is ready for configuration. (Because both integrated NICs usually use the same driver, this is likely.) If you set up everything else during the installation, you'll need only to enter the command "ifup eth1" to start up the NIC.

To make the NIC activate automatically at boot, go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts and edit the file "ifcfg-eth1". Change the line "ONBOOT=no" to "ONBOOT=yes".

Alternatively, you can use the "system-config-network" command to access the NIC configuration.

Re: One NIC card is not detected

Shalom,

Take a look at dmesg output and in gui mode hwbrowser to be certain the device is not detected.

Activate on boot does not mean its not detected, system-config-network should see the device.
