# Strange one: Browsing SMB shares takes ages on XP

Hey All,

I've got a strange one: On XP SP1 machines, browsing network shares with lots of files / folders takes a really long time, but if you rebuild the SAME machine as NT4 SP6a (so you are on the same network segment and no hardware differences or addressing differences) you can browse the same network shares without delay.

It's a TCP/IP based fully switched 100Mb Full Duplex network.

Any ideas?

David:

Consider this Microsoft KnowledgeBase article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315237

and this one, especially if you use ICS or Remote Access: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;316666

and this one if you have a server or Domain Controller: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;331519

Hope this helps!

Thanks Roger,

Unfortunately neither options had much difference.

I thought the first one might be it (Q315237). But alas, no. I added the TcpWindowSize value & rebooted - but to no effect.

The second is NA as this is not via ICS or Remote (anything).

Third option got me thinking as I have modified the local policy & how communications are signed. Different combinations of enabling / disabling signed and or encrypted communications didn't make a difference.

I'll just have to keep at it.

Regards,
David.
