Take a Journey with us for Software Defined Networking

By Gladys Alegre-Kimura, Global Product Marketing Manager, HP Networking

gak.jpgAt the 2013 Interop (www.interop) in Las Vegas, I ran into a number of people whose first exposure to Software Defined Networking (SDN) was at the show. We at HP know that it is important to get the word out to the many network engineers, who are managing and configuring networks on a daily basis. So we asked Jim Metzler, a networking industry veteran, to develop a video blog series, “SDN Journey” with the goal of educating people about SDN, the use cases, the role of OpenFlow, management of the SDN layers, how to get started, and how SDN will evolve over the next few years, and other important topics.

You can find the “SDN Journey” video series on SDN Central . A new video will be posted every two weeks on the SDN Central Channel section of the website over six months. Four of Jim’s videos have already been posted online.

Over the next four months, my colleagues and I will be writing a series of blogs which provide the HP point of view on the “SDN Journey” video series. So, we will be learning more about SDN from Jim over the next few months. I’m really excited to learn from an industry veteran and his perspective on SDN and the impact to the networking industry.

Here are the topics of the first 4 videos of the SDN Journey series:

Let me discuss the first video – What is SDN? Jim Metzler uses the Open Networking Foundation’s (ONF) definition of software defined networking where the control and data planes have been de-coupled lending to centralized network intelligence and a separation of the applications from the infrastructure. Jim also adds that the control layer has programmatic interface. Based on the ONF’s definition, which is what HP uses to define SDN, I believe HP has the most complete SDN solution offered by any vendor. We are delivering solutions at all three layers of the SDN architecture with OpenFlow based infrastructure, which includes 40 OpenFlow enabled models, a SDN controller and SDN applications that offer real solutions to business problems. HP also offers a programmatic interface with its controller so that other vendors can develop applications to work with the HP SDN controller.

ONF Definition of SDN

As Jim goes into further detail on what software defined is, he describes the history of network virtualization. With network virtualization, the logical layer is abstracted from the physical layer, and these are seen with certain technologies such as NVGRE and VXLAN and STT. The key takeaway is that network virtualization enables virtual machine (VM) migration. SDN, not only solves the VM migration challenge, but a lot more by providing network administrators the agility they need for managing the network.

We have taken the same principals of network virtualization and have created Virtual Application Networks , which includes HP’s SDN solutions, to deliver agility for all types of networks, SDN and traditional. Network agility is key to meet the demands of businesses, whose models are changing at a pace more rapidly than what has been seen before.

Thanks for the video which has cleared the defination of software defined networking.

Also the archictecture and extended benefits of SDN is also valuable.

Regarding other services regarding Network support NETWORK FISH has helped me lot.
