Re: how to duplicate win2000 prof. clients ?
of course it helps, but
1.) how to create an image of w2k on the linux
server over the network (LAN) using dd ?
2.) how to ghost w2k from linux server
over the network (LAN) ?
I would like to boot w2k with the mini linux on floppy and IMAGE (in or out) will be done automatically.
is that possible?
kind regards
chris

Re: how to duplicate win2000 prof. clients ?
I never try it but I think it's possible.
I did a diskless PC,
in fact, this workstation was booting over the lan (it's also possible with a floppy), and the root file system was installed on an nfs server. by this way, i had all the linux tools (even X11,gnome and kde, like a standard PC).
For this, you have to create an minilinux on floppy wich will include the dd command, the driver of your network card, and hard drive, the nfs client (to mount the share where is stored the w2k image). And this should be enough !
see the diskless how-to for the way to create a linux on floppy or through lan (if your workstation can boot over the lan - what nic do you have ?).
to create/restore the image, then dd is your friend.

SolutionNIC is Network Interface Card.
If the main board of your w2k pc include an embedded network card, then you have probably in the bios the ability to boot on the lan.
All you need in this case is :
- a dhcp server : to attribute an IP to your pc + the address of the tftp server on which you have the boot loader.
- a tftp server : to store the bootloader (like lilo) + the linux kernel
- a nfs server : to store the root File /system. You can also use a ramdrive.
Read the Linux-Diskless-howto to see all the details....
