networking XP to laptop

my home computer runs WinXP
office laptop runs W98se
i am aware of the patch required for the 98 machines but the network card on the laptop is pcmcia and the ptch fails to install

anyone know of a workaround?

the network card is a netgear 310 or 310 tx ? i forget but i need to install the win98 patch for networking into xp and the patch fails to install because during the reboot windows dopes not see the netword card to continue installing the patch the card does not show up until windows has fully booted

Try using the lmhosts file to provide the link between the 2 systems.

I'm assuming that you can't get to shares using the netbios names, but can ping the IP address.

place an entry in each system's lmhosts file:
/system32/drivers/etc
rename the lmhosts.sam to "lmhosts". Then place entries in the lmhosts file similar to:

10.10.10.25 mydesktop
10.10.10.26 mylaptop

where "mydesktop" and "mylaptop" are the PRECISE netbios names.
