new desktop with gigabit adapter has slower connection speed

I don't know if this belongs in this thread or not but it's a start. I recently began upgrading my users from very old home built PCs to company standard hp/compaq desktops. Everyone that has received a new desktop that has the broadcom gigabit adapter. I've tried everything from forcing it to 100MB full duplex on NIC, Server and the port on our Cisco 2950 switch. Yet the user still insists that his old computer accessed network files faster...does anyone have any suggestions?

Nicole:

What OS did the old computer run? the new computer? the server? What service packs?

Nicole,

what happens, when you configure NIC and switch for auto sensing and what is the setting now?

Re: new desktop with gigabit adapter has slower connection speed

It is set to 100MB full duplex on both the Nic and the port on the switch. Originally it was set to auto and it was plugged into the hub that it always had been plugged in. When he mentioned the speed issue I plugged him into the newest switch we had and designated a port for him...set it to the same as the NIC and waited to hear if there was any change...none. He's only had the desktop about a month...it was ordered about a month before that...so I don't know how old the driver is or if an update is available or will help but I guess I can try that too. Any other suggestions?

Re: new desktop with gigabit adapter has slower connection speed

SMB signing could be an issue (assuming Windows XP client)

(other possible issues also listed)

Also transmit and receive buffers (TX/RX) in the network driver (if available for config) could be worth looking into. (See vendor info/readme files for the NIC)

Re: new desktop with gigabit adapter has slower connection speed

Oh and sorry for not answering the first question. It's Windows 2k, SP4 desktop and 2k Server SP3. After talking to some of our Corporate IT and doing some research I have found that the problem could be the switch. They had similar problems. I am still going to update the driver if possible and see if that helps...change him to another switch after that...basically try and narrow the possibilities down some. As always other suggestions are welcome...
