nslookup - Can't find server name for address 10.0.0.100: Timed out

DNS server OS: win 2k3

I have configured the zone of test.com, the SOA, NS records and their glue records, as well other records are properly configured in the zone.
but from any xp client(even at dns server) if i do:

D:\>nslookup www.test.com
DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.
*** Can't find server name for address 10.0.0.100: Timed out
Server: UnKnown
Address: 10.0.0.100

Name: www.test.com
Address: 20.20.20.20

why it says "Server: UnKnown" ? and "Can't find server name for address"

in the dns server console, event viewer doesnt contain even a single warning.

Any Help will be highly appreciated
Thanks
Regards

hi,

the error indicates that the DNS server cannot be reached or the service is not running on that computer.

to correct this problem, either start the DNS service on that server or check for possible connectivity problems.

also, add the IP address of a valid DNS server to this list.

Re: nslookup - Can't find server name for address 10.0.0.100: Timed out

Dear Joseph Loo, thanks for reply.
every client have Prefered DNS server ip, in the tcp/ip settings.
DNS server(service) is runing fine.
FQDN<--->IP conversion is also properly performing. Just this nslookup output is odd. Although every thing is working fine.

Have you configured a reverse lookup zone?

NSLOOKUP relies on reverse lookup to resolve IP's to server name's, DNS will function ok without it, but one of the indications that its missing is timeout errors in NSLOOKUP.

If you haven't, Give this a try and see what happens,

Dear Jonathan Axford thanks for the support.
Yes I have also configured the reverse lookup zone.. and all is working fine.

and the prblm has solved now .. i simply restart the machine... and then nslookup

nslookup www.test.com

Server: ns1.test.com
Address: 10.0.0.100

Name: www.test.com
Address: 20.20.20.20

now my beleive on restart is even stronger ;)

Re: nslookup - Can't find server name for address 10.0.0.100: Timed out

I thought we do not have to restart windows 2003 OS when we change configurations.. at least i never had to restart OS after changing anything in DNS! Just restarted the DNS Server service.
