static ip for printer...print server won't recognize...

installed printer with dhcp...did not know PCs IPs were reserved in the IP area that the printer took...had problems...found out problem....took printer offline, assigned it a static IP in area reserved for printers IPs, uninstalled and reinstalled printer drivers on server setting the IP, sub and gateway but printer still does not connect?

yes, I can ping....it is a Dell W5300...their web site offers no help....when test print is sent print dialogue box states printer "offline"....

Are you sure you don't have the printer in offline mode on your client?

If you open the printer and select "Printer" from the menu look at the "Use Printer Offline" setting.

OK...I was pondering your suggestions while looking at the printer settings....ping OK...printer ready...settings in place....something was not right....PORT...it seems that when I loaded the drivers, etc on the server, either the port configurations were wrong or you have to manually create one for stataic IPs??? Howver, I created a port for my printer using its IP addy and all works fine...

Any suggestions as to why the port did not configure correctly first time?

Since you have the printer set up on a static IP and can ping it, what happens if you set up your Windows desktop to act as a print server and print directly to the printer (bypassing your print server)?

I'm don't think I know how to do that....configuring a port using the actual IP address seemed to work fine...I was able to connect the drivers to the clients through the server and not the CD and the static addy means no conflicts with the other clients...there was no need to go further....

How would I "hotwire" the client bypassing the server (print server)?

On your desktop, go to start>settings>printers...

select "add new printer" and click next

select "local printer" and deselect "plug and play". click next

select "create new port" and choose "standard TCP/IP port". click next, then next in the TCP/IP printer wizard.

enter the IP address for the printer. click next.

choose the appropriate printer model, set your sharing, and viola, you're done.

For a new ip-adres you need to create a new (LPR) printerport.
You can simply connect the existing printer to the new port.
